I used this Fizik thick film gel tape on my aluminum frame road bike. Aluminum bikes always seem like a tough ride to me, but that (and the thick bar tape) absorbs any bumps. I have small tires (23) and they don't absorb shock very well so a shim is required. They fit easily under tape and are sticky enough to hold in place during installation, but won't leave a sticky film if you need to remove them later (e.g. to replace a cable). I used these gel pads along with the Fizik Performance bar tape when I bought the 3T Ergonova bar. Yes, this material makes the bars thicker, but since I don't race anyone I just take a slight loss in aerodynamics and ride comfortably. I purchased this product to relieve moderate hand pain that I had during long rides. At first I thought I just had to be fit for my bike, which made things better, but the pain in my palms remained.
