Great Code Reader - Code Readers and Scan Tools

Great Code Reader. The code will not be deleted! It tells you what's going on by flashing the engine light umpteen times so you can pinpoint the problem or point you in the right direction. If you fix the problem, the light will turn off. It comes with a code book so you can see what it's telling you.

Works as advertised

Works as advertised. Ideal for GM OBD1 system. If you'd rather use a paper clip I totally understand, but it feels a little less goofy to use and the included code book is a nice perk. Also checks the rear ABS system for drum brakes. I have no press in front, 1988. Recommend to people with k1500.

  • Free for educational purposes

Works as advertised!

Yes, I think a DIYer could achieve the same result with a paper clip, but I feel uncomfortable putting paper clips into the diagnostic reader's binding posts. Sounds like something I'd screw up and do more damage than I'm willing to fix on a 27 year old truck. and besides, this thing was only about $30. Anyway, it worked as advertised. bad EGR valve. swapped and all is good. (1994 Chevrolet K1500 Silverado)

Pros
  • Lots of positive emotions
Cons
  • The cable is shorter than other picks

Works perfectly on 1991 S10.

Works great on 1991 S10. Yes I know you can jump over two terminals and get the same results. I use this because the outlet is in an awkward location and my Clumsy recipe works well enough that I can jump over the wrong terminals and damage who knows what. The book is a bit confusing in the code section, but I found the code descriptions on the internet and later bought a Haynes manual that has consistent descriptions.

Pros
  • Works great for me
Cons
  • Some trouble

Not what you think!

It's all a damn expensive CLIP. The same result can be achieved by using a paper clip to cross the A and B connectors on the vehicle's CEL connector and reading the flashing Check Engine Light codes on the instrument cluster. It's cheaply made in China, but I have to say that if you short the A and B terminals together to get a reading, it works. Oh, and the book that comes with it is easy to download from the internet. NOTHING! So I just sent a $20 bill to China that was worth 50 cents.

  • Decent performance

You received the update before you even read it

It says all instructions must be repaired before you can use it. It actually says you fixed it before I can tell you what's wrong with it! My truck wouldn't start, I just flashed 12 1212 1212 which means it's in good condition and ready to go. I fixed it, put it back on her, and you know what it said? 12. They built the damn thing for a reason that I think would be good for some applications but not for me. However, it looks great gathering dust in my toolbox! See picture above

Pros
  • Certified
Cons
  • You could choose a newer model

The code reader worked great!

I have a 92 Camaro RS 3.1L. Instead of using the paperclip method, I decided to buy this reader. Connected directly to the OBD1 connector in the fuse box under the dash. When you turn on the ignition, this device will flash the check engine light using codes stored in the ECM. Worked well and identified code 43 for me. Although it's a bit pricey for what it does, it can be used on multiple OBD1 vehicles and that makes it so you don't have to squirm under the driver's dash to get around to use a

Don't waste your money

Waste of money. This piece of junk doesn't read/display error codes. All it does is short pins A and B of the reader connector on the car. Error codes appear as flashing lights on the dashboard, which must be written down with pen and paper and then 'read'. A paper clip jumping over terminals A and B does the same thing. The only saving grace is that it comes with a booklet (also with easily accessible information that you can get elsewhere for free) that tells you what the error codes mean. I…
