A must if you're buying an Innova code reader

has been damaged Firstly, it avoids the question raised by a number of people about the strength of the pin (or lack) of the reader itself. Connect the cable to the reader carefully and you'll never have to worry about the contact issues again that people have complained about when using the reader. A long cable makes OBD1 testing easier as you can sit in the driver's seat and do the rest of the car. Change settings while still reading/using the meter.

Pros
  • good thing

Works the way you want it to work

Obviously I wanted to extend the connection to the OBD reader so I can have it in a better place to work with. He did it and it worked. The connections are tight, so tight that it took some effort to undo them. I left the extension cord connected to the read port under the cover. The cable is thin enough, I think you can close the hood and put the reader in the car for active reading. I haven't done this yet, but it looks like it will work.

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Pretty much everything is fine

NOT commercially available!

I didn't realize how difficult it was to find an OBD 1 code reader until I needed one for an '88 Ford F-350 I'm working on. Any code reader you can buy at an auto parts store is OBD II and III, not me, and they start at $79 and up! Revan to the rescue! Simple OBD-I Reader for less than $25! And given the location of the OBD-I connector (under the hood, in front of the brake booster), I also opted for an extension cable; That way I can sit in the driver's seat, hold the code reader in handโ€ฆ

Lubricate scanner and cable pins first

Bought a 3145 OB-1 scanner which worked great but was a chore to use without that extension cord. So I bought this cable separately. As others have stated, when plugging the extension cord into the scanner, it pushed one of the pins on the scanner back against the scanner's body. I didn't notice until I removed the cable. I was very cautious when I first plugged in the cable after reading other reviewers' comments. I didn't want to return them both because when they work, they work reallyโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Heavy duty
Cons
  • Available in white only

Will not work on my 1990 Ford Ranger

I bought this and the 3145 code reader at the same time hoping I could use it to do a KOER test myself from the cab of my 1990. Pickup Ford Ranger. But unfortunately I never got that far. When I first tried to run the KOEO test with it, the code reader wouldn't go into test mode. I've tried several times with no success. Finally, I removed the extension cord and plugged the code reader directly into my truck's test sockets. The reader went into test mode on the first try and I was able toโ€ฆ

Pros
  • One year trial
Cons
  • Upgradeable
