Great bits - mediocre body

Very sharp bits, great design, very smooth holes. However, the case is staggering. When you pop the yellow clasp to open the case it is very poorly designed and when the case is open it slides completely off the case if you slide the clasp the other way. Inside, the mounts aren't very well designed, and large bits often fall out when the case is opened.

Pros
  • This is amazing
Cons
  • Some bugs

Assortment of Irwin Speedbor Spade bits

I have used these bits for drilling studs for rough wiring. They seem to drill much faster than traditional bladed drills and leave fairly clean exit holes. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they hold up after hundreds of holes. Unfortunately they don't hold up at all if you hit a hidden nail. While hitting a nail will simply "wind up" a regular paddle without spurs (which can usually be resharpened), accidentally hitting a nail with one of them will immediately break off both spurs…

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • A newer model could have been chosen

I have used Irwin SpeedBor Paddle Bits for many years and find them well worth the price. The hinged plastic case that came with these attachments is decent enough, but a lot bulkier than the vinyl roll I usually carry them in. I've found these bits to puncture quickly and cleanly when new, but have never been known to stay sharp. or as long with regular use. However, the price is low enough that they can be swapped out individually if needed. It seems that one encounter with a nail is enough…

  • Nice to use
