Warning to Dog Owners: The product may be great for its intended use, but shortly after installation my AmStaf/Boxer mix started acting like it would raise a thunderstorm (back closet and wiggle). I stayed there for 5 days while researching storms, earthquakes, a vet visit and other possible causes. I removed the blockage and at night she was back to normal.

They work as I had one next to the boat batteries which I was charging in the basement and it died. It turns out that when charging lead-acid batteries, hydrogen gas is released, which also sets off the alarm - learned something new. I bought one of the more expensive LCD displays; waste of money. I never looked at it and was only interested in whether it would work. I have 4 at home.

They are also unobtrusive, very easy to install and have a 10-year lifespan, as well as battery backup in the event of a power failure. I chose Kiddes over the equivalent First Alert because Kiddes has a 10 year lifespan while First Alert has a 7 year lifespan. These devices are basic and no frills, which is what I wanted/needed. In my case, I saw no need to buy fancy devices…

I have three of these detectors and they all work very well. When you pull the backup battery tab, you should hear a loud beep indicating it is working and the batteries have been recognized correctly. When connected to the wall, the green light is constantly on. When operating in backup mode, it flashes green every 60 seconds to indicate it's still running and flashes red when the backup battery is low and needs replacing. I have just received these so the review cannot be that helpful or detailed. Only time will tell with this purchase. These devices are the size of a large fist. One is unobtrusive on the wall as it is white. Batteries are advertised as having a 10 year life and are supplied with the unit. There is an off button for the horn - thank goodness! You'll wake up half the block. VERY loud, VERY shrill. but you want it I suspect it's louder than a car horn or a road bore and maybe even your smoke…
