Fast, plug and play, quiet and cool

Lacie makes good stuff. Your d2 line of drives looks great with a sturdy metal body that's understated yet elegant in techno style. This drive also matched their d2 DVD burners, with the same metallic look and blue light. Same PSU, so if you somehow lose one or one fails and the other stays, you're still in luck. Triple interface. Yes, Firewire 400 (single port), 800 (dual port) and USB 2.0 for those of you PC types :) Try FireWire 400. Attached cable, attached power supply and boom. 160GB of…

Great item, but be careful when customizing.

I bought this to back up all my iTunes purchases and digital pictures. Now that it's running, it's serving me perfectly. It's quiet, runs cool, and offers near-instant file access (I access via USB 2.0). Just be careful when setting it up for the first time. Being male and initially ignoring the installation instructions, I didn't realize that the drive appeared to be preformatted for use with Apple and not Windows. Don't repeat my mistake! After reformatting the drive as instructed it worked…

WARNING WARNING CAUTION

I once bought a Lacie external hard drive (120GB - now unusable) and it has been working for over 10 years. So I bought this on 1/9/2008. 20 days passed after the warranty expired and he suddenly died. What happened to Lacey? Regardless of its past reputation, buyers are suspicious of this drive. I have yet to call their customer service department, but I'm not expecting much given other reviewers' experiences.

Do not do that! good for data storage

I'm buying a second LaCie drive to salvage documents I thought were safe on my original drive which failed after about 1.5 years. $160 for a second drive (that I want to swap out to revive my data) is a much cheaper solution than spending 2-10x more to have my data recovered professionally. (A service LaCie doesn't offer!) Please. Read the forums before you buy this CD! If I had done that, I wouldn't have gone to that pen with a stick!

"D2 is D-One! " in External Hard Drives

Having owned the D2-60GB for four years and still counting, I have decided to consider the D2-160GB as a secondary storage and backup device for add my iMac. Easy to set up - plug in the included power cords and FW400, boot up your iMac and voila! - Instant detection. Split the hard drive into two volumes to separate the OS and audio/video files and started transferring data from iMac to the D2-160GB. There are no problems - the device is very quiet, sometimes muffled clicks are emitted when…

Run, don't walk away from this drive!

Put simply, this drive failed just after the one-year warranty expired. LaCie will not repair or replace it as the warranty has expired. Their support basically told me they couldn't help me and I had to go and find out what the problem was. I ended up removing the Seagate hard drive and putting it in a new enclosure and it works great. The problem was that the LaCie's case was broken and had literally no moving parts! The product failed without warning and that's when I realized I was in the…

Excellent product for external hard drives

I have two of these guys, one for backup, the other is my "portfolio" (back and forth between work and home every day). Not a single problem, plug and play (I use the FireWire interface) and silence. My boss bought it on my recommendation after giving up another brand and he loves it too.

Pros
  • Still happy

  • Was damaged
