Sounds like it was in the 90's

Item was brand new, unused as I tested 0 hours with HD Tune. Incredible bargain for the price without a doubt. The drive works fine so far. Only criticism is that it is quite noisy. Spins and sounds like a jet engine. You can hear each sector as it reads and writes. My newly built computer is otherwise incredibly quiet, which is a shame. but that's a compromise. I wanted plenty of space for my second drive and I'm used to that. it reminds me of simpler times. =

These are great drives for NAS

I have ordered 8 of these drives for my Synology ds1819+. The discs arrived in a well packaged box of 8 individual boxes. The boxes had a western digital stamp, but luckily the discs weren't western digital. All of these drives are brand new Hitachi Enterprise drives. I tested every drive on the bank and found no errors. Most likely, these are drives that have not passed the Hitachi quality check. But I can't say for sure. Either way, they are the perfect solution for my Synology NAS! Take a…

Pros
  • Stable test results
Cons
  • Running

Works very reliably, no weird noises but those faint deep retro clicks that are almost reassuring. Just runs warm, never hot, even when transferring files for hours. Never had an issue with acceleration time, very responsive. I don't have much time but already have a better experience than Seagate. I decided to deduct a star as the exact model number is listed as HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 HUS724040ALE641 and you can get it with a slightly shorter and longer warranty. But if it's available for quick

Big Bang for the Dollar!

According to its characteristics, it does exactly what it stands for. It's fast, has plenty of storage capacity, and pound for pound, you won't find a better deal than this. This is my second and I will order 2 more of these. For gaming on a high performance desktop computer, PERFECT! And by reading some of these reviews, this drive is NOT LOUD! If you are a gamer with a gaming computer then you are a guru who understands that high end computers tend to be very noisy. This drive is quieter than

Enterprise quality at a great price

I do not receive any compensation, reward or rebate for this 5 star rating. Bought as a new NAS drive for home. Happy with it, I bought a second one and am just as happy with it. Mine are outside on a board and my raspberry pi is in my home office. They're no louder than I expected when spinning or reading/writing. They operate in the range of 28 to 40 degrees Celsius without a heat sink (temperature is reported to SMART via openmediavault). They're heavy in a good way. No cheap or flimsy…

Quiet enterprise hard drive, but one in four failed after 11 months.

Installed four of these in my Synology NAS. Quiet, responsive, 0 hours in SMART mode, which is good. Smart Data reports it as Western Digital (HP) MB4000GCWDC, which is fine with me since it's the WD RE4 equivalent. Be sure to check the firmware on the discs upon receipt. HP is reporting issues with the firmware version I received due to drives becoming unresponsive, but this has been resolved in the latest June 2018 release. They are certainly much quieter than my previous Hitachi drives…

Best in Data Warehouse 2+ years

Just to start, I have two of these drives on my non-RAID server running 24/7. To be honest, in terms of size, price and durability (about 25 months now) they are very good... BUT, one of the hard drives I use for parity check gets very hot (42C idle; 46 °C). c+ in operation) compared to the sister disk, which oscillates around 38°C. That's a big difference in thermal performance and I feel like there's a greater chance of failure. So I recently contacted the manufacturer to see if they could…

So far so good, but LOUD!

So how many of you were wondering what the deal was? 4TB for less than $70? Well, that's my experience so far. The drive came like most OEM drives, cardboard, spacers to keep it stable. All good things are mine Use mine as a backup drive via a USB 3.0 port. The first thing I noticed was LOUD. I knew it would be a bit noisy for a corporate drive since it runs at 7200, but it's still very noticeable. Now it's clear that mine was less than 2ft from me in an open case, but I think you can still…
