Yes it has an open flame but it says it has a sensor so it will turn off when the oxygen is sucked out of the air. And if it tips over, it will also turn off for safety reasons. Also, it says on the front of the box that it can be used in tents. We have a propane tank that we got separately and you attach it and leave that tank there until you use it until it's empty.
