Video system component

Beautiful box. It replaces a separate DVD player and VHS player and can also burn DVDs. It has a built in digital tuner and converts whatever is playing to the resolution of the TV. It has a digital output (HDMI) for connection to a TV. In my application I use my house antenna tuner to receive off air digital broadcasts and the cable input goes straight to the TV. I didn't realize how important the upconversion feature was until I saw it - it makes old media look like . better. In my spare time

Do not buy refurbished devices.

Bought 2 used, dad and me. The main advantages were a digital tuner and the ability to record to VHS or disc. Dad's DVD would not open at all and had to be sent back for a replacement but had to fight hard with a company that claimed to have 'fixed' it. Now my VCR is not working. There was dust in the DVD tray. The tracking on the video recorder is broken, and in fact the so-called 30-day guarantee is over. At least the tuner and DVD burner still work. The new ones don't seem much betterโ€ฆ

Crashed but refunded from outlet

I had a previous version of this recorder which I still use today and in two years I've had minimal problems. This item was ordered as a refurbished machine, but it broke within 24 hours of using it. So I can't say much about that. This review relates more to the third party that sold it to me. Within 3 days with some communication interruptions, the seller (California based point of sale) complied with the return and expedited my return. They also refunded my shipping costs in full, so I onlyโ€ฆ

Digital TV broadcast recording

I bought this for my parents whose analog VCR will soon stop receiving a signal. The setup screens look easy to use. In fact, it looks just like our Toshiba DR560 1080p upconverted DVD recorder with built-in tuner. They are probably using the same software provider. The tuner is digital but not HD. The picture it sends to its HDMI output is lower resolution than the TV tuner. This is understandable since the DVD standard is not HD. My parents are satisfied with the picture quality. It's muchโ€ฆ

Very upset!

Update October 2010: Now that I have been using this unit for over a year I am disgusted with it and possibly DVD recorders in general. I say this because I have two devices from two different brands and I tend to conclude that the whole format is sluggish and unreliable. My old VCR works better, faster and more reliable. This unit records a TV program until I stop the recording, after which an error message appears stating that it is not possible to write to this disk - this is with a diskโ€ฆ

Looks old fashioned but works well!

Over the last few years I have bought several expensive VCR/DVD combo players/recorders including Sony, Toshiba and JVC. With limited use, all 3 had problems in the first year, e.g. B. DVD tray stuck open, VCR eating tapes, VCR heads misaligned and not reading video etc. Nowadays try to find someone to solve these problems. Electronics - don't exist in my area - and I intend to learn the basics myself. In the meantime I needed a VCR/DVD combo with an internal tuner - I have some old but fineโ€ฆ

Pros

Be careful what you buy

I would not recommend this product, I bought it online in early December for Christmas when it arrived and plugged in I couldn't get the VCR section to work so I contacted Philips support. The person he spoke to asked me to try a few things and concluded that the VCR section was defective. (They left for Christmas) So he sent me a replacement unit. When I plugged in the power supply and found that the new VCR wouldn't work, they informed me that they had to have a separate connector for the VCR

  • Dual media playback and recording on DVD-R-RW and DVD+R+RW
