Description of πŸ”§ Essential Tools for Garage Door Tension Springs: Prime-Line GD 52238 Torsion Spring Winding Rods, 1/2” x 16”, Pack of 2

WIND AND UNWIND SPRINGS – The pair of torsion spring winding rods are specifically designed for increasing (winding) and decreasing (unwinding) the tension on residential garage door torsion springs. MUST HAVE TOOL – GD 52238 Torsion Spring Winding Rods is the only tool recommended to make torsion spring adjustments to balance the weight of a garage door. Failure to use these rods when replacing or adjusting torsion springs may result in personal injury and property damage. SAFETY FIRST – Steel torsion rods allow you to safely perform torsion spring replacements and adjustments without worrying about keeping the spring tension under control. When adjusting or replacing garage door torsion springs, it is extremely important that these tasks are not attempted with any tools other than these rods. DIMENSIONS – Garage door torsion spring winding rods are 1/2” in outside diameter and 16” long. They are designed to industry standard for residential garage door use. WINDING CONES USAGE - Winding cones should be wound and unwound 1/4 turn at a time. Torsion spring rods are not for use on winding cones larger than 33/64" in diameter.

Worked well enough. would modernize

It worked fine but I think it has a rough grippy surface for handles and a slightly tighter fit halfway down the end. Maybe loops or something would be safer. They slipped twice while handling if no force was applied to one of the bars. caught them as they fell. I feel like they need to be pulled out with at least a little bit of force when removing them from the hole. My hands were sweaty and slipped along the slick pole. I think next time I'll wear grippy gloves.

  • Lots of positive emotions

Works great on Clopay doors

Arrived quickly and in great condition. Removed the protective plastic caps from the ends and decided to tape reflective yellow tape (not included with the poles) 1 inch above the end of each pole. I did this after watching the recommendation video as it is very easy to ensure the rods are fully inserted into the torsion spring cone every time. Adjusting the springs on the double and single garage door took about 10 minutes. Happy with the purchase.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Large and bulky

Suitable for cone winding and provides leverage

I had to move the torsion bar a little to one end. I previously adjusted another door with a 1/2" shank that was shorter than the unwind tool. The levers on my makeshift tool weren't good enough to make the task easier. The unwind tool fitted the torsion spring cone well and was long enough to provide leverage to make spring winding easier For the price, it's worth getting rather than messing around with sub-optimal home-made tools.

Like good quality steel bars

Excellent material, durable and reliable. The ends of the rods needed a bit of polishing, they were a bit sharp but the file cured it. I wrapped two torsion springs around a 10 foot tall, 12 foot wide door. I recommend them as they turned out to be real cold rolled steel bars, nice and heavy. I've marked my black tape as a safety factor so I can confidently say I inserted them fully every time. And I sealed the other ends with tape so there's less danger if my hand slips off the pole. This can…

Worked great: hardware

A pair of torsion bars worked great! I have successfully coiled/uncoiled the garage door springs and made the necessary adjustments to balance the weight of the garage door. While it's just a pair of metal rods, it's the special tool needed to adjust the torsion spring. It's worth a small investment. Do not improvise with a different type of bar that may not fit properly or may fail under tension. There is a risk of injury because coil springs store a lot of energy. As with any home improvement

Pros
  • great for me
Cons
  • unreliable

These rods were purchased from Revain and used to replace a pair of 25 year old springs where one spring broke Both springs as a set. Matched spring sets last longer and perform better than unmatched sets. Replacing these springs is "easy and safe" if you follow the right procedures and use the right tools, including these coil rods. If you are unfamiliar with sectional door technology and theory and/or replacement procedures, there are many great videos on the internet. Review procedures while
