QRP only: Antennas

I'm switching to Mobil on 75m _ 6m. This is the best solid mount I've found. The downside is I wouldn't use this mount for anything other than 11m low power. The SO239 is only about 0.040 inches from center to body or ground. I wouldn't run 100 watts with a $5,000 flex or Icom 9100 with this design. I hope the upgrade of the dielectric pad and mounting screws is complete. It's much stronger than gum mounts, but ONLY for QRP!

  • Pretty impressive

PL259 connector center electrode hole not deep enough

/ PL259 connector center electrode hole is not drilled deep enough to fully engage the PL59 connector. Also, it is oversized, resulting in poor electrical connection. Both together will give you SWR nightmares, and even if you manage to set up your antenna properly, you'll lose both transmit and receive signal because the connector isn't fully inserted. Avoid like the plague. The idea isn't bad, but the implementation isn't quite standard.

  • Handy item
Cons
  • Very expensive

The idea is great, but the design is bad.

I really like that stainless steel is cheap but I won't use it. The electrical connection to the body is via a smooth surface with no "teeth" to cut into the steel. The center socket of the SO-239 connector is not a socket at all. There is no tight grip to ensure a secure connection. I prefer exceptional RF connections. This cannot be achieved. Because the radiation resistance of a quarter-wave stub is low, and shorter/loaded stubs are even lower, any additional resistance reduces the…

Strong and well made except for.

The insulating gasket that sits between the bracket and the surface it is attached to only fits a 4 watt switch. I used it with a 100 watt ham radio and shortly after installation it caught fire. It's too thin and I suspect there is some carbon in the black plastic. In any case, it's definitely here now. Otherwise, it's a well-made piece of stainless steel. (Okay, some instrument clatter on flat surfaces, but hey). It has no problem holding a 102-inch steel whip, and I'm not worried about any…

Will not fit 1/4 " thick mounts

So they built what they call a HEAVY DUTY mount. It's heavy. It's a mount. Also, it's a terrible design. It will NOT fit a 1/4" thick angle bracket. It (barely) fits a standard Firestick mount that's about 3/16" thick, but only has about 1-1/2 screw threads. If they want to develop something HEAVY, they should be able to mount it on a HEAVY DUTY mount. As is, it will fit an 11 ga (1/8th thickness) mount. Not quite acceptable for me as a heavy mount. You could make it work with a screw even .125

Pros
  • Hands-free operation
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for seniors

Works in some situations but the design doesn't allow me to use it

Now I understand why so many mounts are used. It's a great idea, but poorly implemented. Mounted on a 1/8 flange, the screw makes about 3 turns of contact with the antenna side of the bracket. I could probably live with that, but the hole in the screw is a fixed size so it doesn't have a "pinching effect" on the center wire of the antenna cable. This may not be an issue for some if your center cable is fairly large, but I have no connection. I give 3 stars because it works for some but not for…

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Requires an outlet

It's very durable and well built, however.

As previously mentioned, this is a very strong antenna mount for any antenna that requires a 3/8"-24 threaded mount. The problem with this mount is the design of the SO-239 connector where The contact for the center pin only makes contact with the tip of the pin and does not interact with the sides of the pin with spring bars like real connectors do. Spring bar contacts that make contact with the sides of the pin have teeth to prevent rotation prevent plug on a standard PL-259 For my…

Great product but I had a used one

First good. This is a reinforced stud mount that goes through a standard 3/8" hole like a regular stud mount. The plastic washer/insulator is oversized to spread the weight, but the protrusion that needs to fit the hole in your mount is still 3/8" so you don't have to buy special mounts or drill a larger hole to accommodate it to get it fitted. The SO-239 socket on the bottom is for the included hex wrench. It can be used in combination with the wrench on top to really twist and tighten the…
