Description of Stanley FMHT16579 FATMAX Chisel Compass
Used for marking precise hole locations. Hold pivot scribe in place and move pencil holder around it to create perfect circles. 16 in. solid fiberglass rod. Limited lifetime warranty.
Poor poorly finished Chinese tool. Yes it worked for a 15 inch circle that I had to draw and cut out. But this is definitely not your standard DeWalt quality! Why not add a few bucks to the price and create a quality, reliable tool? can only break open in the tool box!
I ordered a 16" fiberglass compass and received a 12" aluminum tube compass. 16" look elsewhere until this problem is solved. I ended up buying a 16" tube which originally cost more than the compass.
The compass is advertised as 16 inches long. The compass is 13.5 inches long with an effective compass radius of 12 inches. Honestly, it's not Revane's fault, it's Stanley's. The same item with the same model number is sold at Lowes with the same advertised 16 inch length but with the same issue.
Overall quality is not quite what I expected from Stanley. I have third generation Stanley tools that still work well. I doubt this tool will last that long. The gizmo that holds the pencil at the correct radius does not tighten enough to hold the included golf scoring card type pencil. After much fiddling and much profanity, I disassembled the mount and found a spare nut in my workshop. After replacing the broken factory nut with a quality compass it works perfectly. If I didn't have a…
Considering the two dollars I paid for the add-on, it's not that bad. It's by no means a solid tool, but it gets the job done. The two things that make it better (besides heavier materials) are the ability to make the inner circle narrower and the scale. If I had paid full price I would have been less generous with the review.
Mislabelled product. It is stated to make circles with a 16 inch radius, but the maximum radius is about 12 inches. Although it may seem wrong, the device creates an accurate circle; A rigid bar supports the sketch well. You can replace the dowel with a longer one from any hardware store, so it will work if you're willing to invest more, but will do it all by itself - unless you're making smaller circles, it may not be appropriate. Also, you can replace the #2 pencil with any writing utensil of
I don't understand how anyone gave this item a positive review. The positive reviews on this make me question the Revain review process and the legitimacy of the reviews. The quality of this product is or below what you would expect at a dollar store. Materials are literally the cheapest. In addition, the design has serious flaws. Both clamps will damage the rod when tightened. The pen holder can only hold the smallest pen. No construction site will ever use a pencil of this kind. You can't put
