🔆 5-Watt Solar Battery Trickle Charger by Sunforce - Black Review

Works well, delivers manufacturer's rating, Feels solid, quality product but glass has cracked after two days in the sun. It has not been moved since installation. I'm assuming this is a coincidence as the solar panel shouldn't crack when exposed to sunlight. I'm not sure what to do at the moment.

I bought this in August 2016 to service my RV battery. This product worked great at first. I took it with me on trips and enjoy the reliability of work. But now I was disappointed. The block just doesn't work anymore. I expected it to last more than a year. Now I'm about to buy something else.

Several reviews state that the panel drained its batteries when plugged in. Mine did the same. I opened up the black junction box and the red and black wires were correct. Verification with a meter showed that the positive and negative sides of the plate were wrong. Switched red and black and made sure the diode was connected in the right direction. I have a 30ft Trail Runner RV. The only problem I had was figuring out where to place the solar panel. I just wanted to use it while keeping the camper. That way I could just slip it over my propane tanks and use the elastic cords to keep it in place in windy conditions. So easy to take off and put back on. I'm very glad I found an easy and quick way to put it on and take it off. Ideal for keeping the battery continuously charged during storage.

Used for 2 seasons to service house/chassis batteries while in storage - seemed to work fine but at the end of the 2nd winter a plate died. I opened the supposedly sealed control cabinet on the back and found that water had gotten in and the connection to the panel was open (breakage in the panel - not repairable). This is a good solar charger that does what it is supposed to do. I had a few small issues with it. That's why I give it a three and not a four. So it comes with four mounting tabs that snap into the frame. I had to sand down one of them to make it click into the frame. This is my second Sunforce charger, just an updated version of the first one which has lasted over 8 years and is mounted on the roof of our diesel generator 'house'. In Northwest Florida we get plenty of wind and tropical weather, as well as mostly fair weather and sunshine. The starter for our generator is a 12V battery; We live in a rural area where power outages are not uncommon and when they do occur repairs can be delayed by hours or days. It is very important to keep our battery charged.
