Looks damn good

So far the tips have been great. I read a review that said they don't transfer heat well, but that wasn't my experience. I honestly can't tell them apart from the original Hako. The quality seems very close. I think they will last me for years but if there are any changes I will come back and update my review.

Pros
  • Comfortable
Cons
  • Crumpled

They were able to solder an entire modular synth

I used a bunch of puppies to solder a Moog style modular analog synth. Thousands of components, zero problems. I mostly use a curved tip because I've found it transfers heat better to tiny traces, but they all seem to do a perfectly acceptable job. I used them with a fake Hakko FX-888 I bought from Sparkfun; They may work with other fakes as well, but you should check.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Boring packaging

Great deal on Hakko clone tips

Finally tried some clone tips after realizing the Haako tips for my 888 didn't have enough thermal mass to work on the board. I only tried them because they looked like a good choice and being new to very detailed board level repairs I really wasn't sure which advice would work best for me. I highly recommend them, but don't make the one mistake I made when I forgot to tin the tip of a new tip before I started. You can see where I stopped with some tinkering after the fact.

Excellent tips Hakko

The Hakko soldering iron comes with a pointed tip that heats something very badly. To solve this problem I had to increase the temperature of the iron well above the recommended range. When I tried to remove the Hakko tip, I found that the cylinder surrounding the heating element was stuck to the tip. I bought this set to be able to use one of the several chisel tips that came with it. Then I had to buy a new pen to replace the damaged one. I found a Chinese clone that works fine. The new spade

Poor thermal performance

Brand new, they were indistinguishable from a genuine Hakko handpiece. In fact, I mixed the new Hakko tip with this one and picked the clone as what I thought was the real tip (because I didn't notice the engraving on the real Hakko tip). However, once I started using these tips, the difference became clear: the temperature of the tip didn't match the set temperature on my FX-888D like the original Hakko tip. I messed up a few pads trying to get them to work and ended up wondering if they were…
