Gripless pads do the same job, but you either have to wear gloves or wash yourself thoroughly afterwards. As for the rings around the inside of the bowl, I've never had mineral deposits there, so I can't attest to that.

If you're seriously not afraid to stick your hand in the toilet, don't use a pen and just buy some pads.
