A tool that works the way it's supposed to.

I've had the Master and Empire (same) and they don't fix very well and the cap on the leveling plug falls off. The cap on this one is really good, doesn't slip when finger tightened and the bottle is sealed with a brass stopper. I really like it when a tool does what it's supposed to do. When I use a 12" Master to line closet doors, the blade slides over me. You need to use pliers to tighten it enough. I work as a remediation company and use the 6" and 12" daily and recommend the Irwin combo…

Premier Tool in Measuring & Marking Tools

The IRWIN Combo Square is a first class tool. This is for those who actually use them. I bought this little square to use in my little shop, mainly for tuning machines. Since it's small, it's great for that. I've tried it, but can't find anything negative about it. Some of the reviewers are a little over the top (in my opinion). I'm serious? This square makes the PERFECT square measurement. If you are looking for micro. And I mean MICRO measurements, I don't have an answer for you. The numbers…

Poor quality, very difficult blade to change

It should be a simple tool, reliable and no problem. No, that is not so. I have a lot of these squares in my tools and this one is useless. Every time you loosen the adjustment screw, the blade becomes hopelessly stuck. It takes a lot of wrangling and swearing to get it gliding again. I drop it, it's so annoying. Instead, I bought an old one off eBay. I'm willing to pay more for tools I can rely on and this isn't one of them. I even tried some mods and lubes to make it usable. I'm not sure if…

The hand feel is terrible. . .

This tool is fairly cheap, and you get what you pay for: a small, palm-sized, square, functional device; End of the story. There is no balance, materials, or attention to detail in toolmaking, making it a pleasure to hold or use on a regular basis. The body of the square is heavier than required for a simple square and is paired with a very light blade. The processing of what I received was poor. The edges of everything were sharp. The blade is mild steel, and mine showed the soft metal ramp…

Great for the price

Great for the price. The movement is grainy and crisp, even after sanding any burrs off the edges. I had to grind the island a bit to get it perfectly flat, but that's to be expected from a tool at this price point. Weight corresponds to size, labeling is clear. To be honest I'd rather not have metric markings - I have to partially turn it over to read imperial units as the cm reading doesn't help. It takes a few turns too much to loosen and tighten when adjusting compared to my PEC 12". I'm…

Well Made and Reliable - Carpenter's Square

I have purchased two combination squares from Irwin - 12" and 6". Both squares share the same construction with heavy duty machined die cast zinc 90* and 45* handles, knurled brass locknut, marker awl and spirit level cap. Scales of 8", 1/16", 1/32" and centimeters/millimeters. A simple but effective squares test is to mark the 90* line, then flip the square and place the line over the previous line to mark. Any discrepancy in the lines would indicate that the instrument is not square. I was…

IMO not useful for metric markings/depth measurements.

This may work for some people, but it's unlikely to be useful for me. It is not properly set up for metric markings or metric depth readings. Look at the picture, you will see that there is no way to accurately/easily set the depth in millimeters. The picture clearly shows the 9/32 setting, but not 8mm. Is it 8 or 8.2 or .? The double metric/imperial square should have metric dimensions on both sides of the blade, allowing one side to take an inside measurement in millimeters and the other side

Pros
  • Stylish and Modern Design
Cons
  • Slightly Crumpled

Possibly best value for money 6 " combo square

This is my best 6" combo square. The slider is very flat and very easy to read if you want to use imperial units. The brass nut has a nice and sharp knurl and feels great. The rule changes when you move it. Also, the reference surfaces of the body are hollow, and only 4 tiny points make contact with the workpiece. Well, only 2 of these four will make contact if you're doing one of the most common things you use them for. And if you measure the outer corner, obviously a little grinding will make
