Excellent quality hand tool

I bought this product despite all the bad reviews and am very happy with it. This is NOT the place where you drop the old chisel and press the button and the new one will appear. It requires some tweaking and I made a mini extension for it that doubles its effectiveness. The holder itself is solid and the stone is flat but dry. ENSURE AND OIL BEFORE USE.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • I will add later

Price does not match price

Like many other reviewers the stone in the set is not square and not smooth. A rough side of the stone I received has a 2" gap and is filled with small pits. The smooth side of the stone is "deformed” and also filled with small pits. The chisel works well enough and is big enough. to hold a 3" to 1/4" bit, but without a quality stone this set isn't worth the money.

Pros
  • Quality assembly
Cons
  • I don't remember but there was something

The stone is useless.

Despite the ratings, took a risk. The sharpener is fine, but the stone is unusable - too porous. There is nothing to indicate grain size or which side is which. I still need a good stone, so I advise you to buy another set or buy a sharpener and stone separately. Also remember that you get what you pay for. However, I really like Irwin's tools. The maple reproduction chisels are very good and I consider them to be excellent quality tools for the price with the exception of this sharpening set.

Pros
  • Few competitors
Cons
  • Very expensive

Useful but poor quality tool

I got this tool because I wanted to sharpen my chisels better by holding them at a constant angle while sharpening. The metal gauge holds the angle well, but the chisel doesn't seem to fit well in the tool. Provided you can chuck the bit properly, it works fine. The oil rock is almost ridiculously curved. When I put it on a flat surface I noticed that it wobbled back and forth a few mm. It still works, but in order not to change the angle when sharpening I was only able to use the last 2 inches

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • So-so

Sharpener Disappointment

I bought this set primarily for a sharpening guide. I chose Irwin because it was inexpensive and I have always been happy with their tools. I cannot recommend this sharpening set. The sharpening guide is colored as shown in the picture. I didn't really think about it when I bought it. The paint is thick and uneven, especially in the groove that holds the chisel. The guide seemed to hold my chisels better after scraping the paint off this channel. It seems he's still holding the chisel at a…

Don't let the name "Marples " fool you. There .

Don't let the Marples name fool you. There is nothing special about this set. The stone is so porous that I used up the whole bottle of oil in it and I still need it. I wanted to use a stone for my axe, but that's junk. The only reason I bought this set was for the sharpening instructions. I thought I'd get the stone for free. Haha well this is how the guide works after posting it in fashion on YouTube. BUT, if you overtighten it, the planer blade will warp. And I couldn't insert the 1/8 bit…

Pros
  • Rugged construction

  • No rifle

Great set for beginners!

I ordered an Irwin chisel sharpening set on Saturday and received it next Monday with another prime listing, good delivery time. I'm new to sharpening my own chisel and iron so thought this was a good start for the price and the instructions are pretty basic. It's a bit difficult to set up the bevel at first, but it's just a learning curve. It sharpens a good edge on the bit fairly quickly, but the stone is a bit short so you don't get a long draw that takes a little longer than it probably…

The guide and stone are of decent quality but I got lucky.

I bought this mainly for guidance but as you are paying for the whole set I will cover all the parts. Manual: Arrived in a clamshell with perforations on the back. open it. That does not work. I learned a long time ago to only use heavy duty scissors on cribs. I initially found it difficult to hold the chisel in place as one side of the jaws was curved and the groove on either side is too thin, but with a bit of dexterity it can be set. There are embossings on the side that say your bit has to…
