The old version was better.

They used to be very good - I had a few early versions and got more because I expected them to be the same. Unfortunately, the new ones are not the same. New models: - smaller - no mounting slots - one LED per port (combo link/activity) - no longer changes color to indicate 10/100/1000 Mbps (on/off only) - rear ports are plastic (no metal shield , shielded cables are useless) A big reason I liked it was the low cost for a fully shielded device. As a radio amateur, I like to reduce radioโ€ฆ

Pros
  • SWITCH CAPACITY: 8 Gigabit ports provide high-speed network connections to devices, while 16 Gbps switching capacity ensures uninterrupted data transmission and reduces traffic congestion.
Cons
  • Ugly packaging

Died and received a reduced warranty

It was great while it worked. During his first year as owner, he began spouting gibberish and bringing the network to a halt. When connected to the network, nothing could communicate, while offline everything was fine. That was 3 years ago and I decided to take the time to replace it before the 5 year warranty expired. To my surprise the warranty has since been reduced to 3 years so I'm late now and feel like I've been robbed. I could have avoided the disappointment I feel if I had been moreโ€ฆ

Stay Connected

This product no longer supports connection to persistent network clients such as DVR. The DVR updates the programming manual, gets the clock, firmware updates, graphics for shows and actors, etc. I prefer ethernet wifi for reliability, but it's all for naught if the switch dies multiple times a day. The 'fix' is to squeeze into the entertainment console and unplug the device, effectively causing a hard reboot. If this 'green' (power saving) block is trying to save power or misinterpreting theโ€ฆ

Overheats and fails

This is a very fast switch for the home use . But it's garbage. I've had it for 5 months and it's already dead. I replaced it with Dlink so we'll see how well it works. The problem is that first. The wart on the wall is huge. This is not a switching power supply. This is a direct transformer. Second, there are two components in the switch that overheat. One seems to me to be a power regulator and the other seems to be some kind of microcircuit that I can't identify. These two components get soโ€ฆ

Great price and performance.

I am writing to correct my previous review. TRENDnet's 8- and 5-port switches served their purpose for many years (before Lightning, see below). Their thermal and electrical efficiency is greatly underestimated. While some switches draw more than twice the power and emit more than twice the heat, these switches are extremely cool and reliable. I had them in a small attic where ventilation was limited, so their reliability had to do with keeping them from overheating. In the couple of years that
