The best biological filter for its size.

This was one of my first fluid bed filters and it is excellent. Filled up to 4 inches with sand, supplemented with Nutafin filter additive and fed 200 gallons of water per hour, it began to show changes in water quality after just three days. He is currently working full time in a 60 gallon cichlid tank in Africa (Malawi) which now has virtually no ammonia, nitrite or nitrate problems. I encourage anyone wishing to use these filters to plan their piping to include a good inlet pre-filter and a…

Keep in a tray to prevent wet floors

I've had one of these before and forgot how fragile the soft rubber corners at the top of the lid are. I followed the media's instructions and left it hanging on my palette (not indoors). Everything seemed to be working fine. A few hours later I returned home to wet the parquet. The elbows on top are sagging and not strong enough to hold the hose when the hose is full of water. Replacing the floor next to the tank would be a huge hassle so I live with that. I moved the reactor to the swamp to…

Advice for use with a Cobalt MJ-600 pump or any pump really

Reactor great so far very basic don't think I will have any problems with this. In case you don't know (like I didn't until I happily read this somewhere) there is a Phosban extension kit that also allows you to hang the reactor on your tank, just perfect for me as I have a Nanotank 14 got gallons and no swamp You can find it here on Amazon for $7. Also, no one will tell you which pump to use with it. I read somewhere about using the Cobalt MJ600 and I did, $33. It turns out that if you reduce…

I wish I knew.

Last week I installed the media editor Two Little Fishies. For what I need, use De*Nitrate at less than 50 gallons per hour. which is slower than Canister or HOB seems to do well. water at the entrance. outlet water. No leaks, noise or drama. I know it will be at least 30 or 45 days before I see any noticeable change in nitrate levels. I did a little pre-purchase reading and settled on the Two Little Fishies device because I was able to get the pump and tubing that I wanted. I was planning on…

Useful device as a vortex sand filter

Use as a vortex sand filter with 200 ml or less of oolitic sand (hand-sifted meridian from marine chemistry). It's a useful biological filter that doubles as an inferior calcium reactor. Ideal for empty aquariums without a biofilter as it can be easily moved between aquariums (once the sand becomes biologically active). Also suitable for planted aquariums, as no CO2 is extracted from the water. Rubber knees are good for the exhaust side but too weak for the intake side. A 1/2" x 2 rigid elbow…
