The best business WiFi solution I've found.

I used to play around with DDwrt routers and other access points in our shop because I like tinkering, but at some point in life you just need something to work well. They were very easy to use and hassle free. I just run the controller from my main PC and if I have any client or bandwidth issues or anything I want to tweak, I just turn it on and I'm done. If you need to expand, no problem, plug in another one, click accept and you're done. I will never go back to my old DDwrt methods =)…

Easy to set up, extremely reliable.

We are very satisfied with the Ubiquiti line of Wi-Fi products and do not use anything else at our facility or for our customers. Now I also use them at home, you can install them with an android application that I made for home use, but for commercial use you need to install a controller to manage and maintain an authorized portal (allows you , forcing users to agree to terms, etc.) We've had a few scenarios where the hotspots were misconfigured (probably our fault) and there's plenty of…

This would be too much of a hassle for most people, but if you're a techie you want to be able to scale your network, run a small business, or use wireless hotspots to supplement your wired ones Connect Devices Connect to a place you wouldn't normally (which is what I used it for) look no further. The software is excellent and has enterprise-class features to analyze traffic from all connected devices and control device access, among many other options that I didn't spend time on. Bottom line…

Best Access Point for Networking Products

My roommate said "Damn!" when I upgraded to them, he saw a difference in throughput compared to his Netgear failbox "router". I matched them with ubiquiti edgerouter4. Previously around 5MB/s from Netgear. Typical speed tests with them were around 58 MB/s. These are real world speeds, not a theoretical maximum of 930 from a wired computer. Anyone who thinks Wi-Fi is approaching wired speeds is a buffoon. Setup can be easy. Due to the required software "WLC lite". This software must be run at…

I can't trust Ubiquiti anymore

Shortly after purchasing these wifi hotspots, a software update from Ubiquiti called home and shared my information without my consent. Not being able to turn down Ubiquiti's decision was a PR nightmare that you can read about elsewhere. As a result, I flashed them with OpenWRT. With OpenWRT these are excellent open source entry points and I get a web interface on each router with no management software required. For a home setup, this works better for me. The OpenWRT features, while not as…

Improvement over router/access point combo

I switched from a combination router and cable provider access point to two indoor and one outdoor access point from ubiquiti. No more dead zones, no more freezing on TVs, etc. They all work from POE back to POE switch, although you can create a Wi-Fi mesh if you want. The only "downside" is that the controller runs on my server and I have too much information at the moment. Wi-Fi used to work, sometimes not. Now I can see which access point is connected to what, how much interference is in the

One works great, the other not at all.

One of the two access points worked right out of the box. So good that I set the transmit level to LOW. I placed the second one at the other end of the house. Worked fine for a week then shut down. Factory reset multiple times. Nobody visits this part of the house that often so it didn't matter. Today I checked it as it doesn't work at all. The light didn't even come on, but the light on the injector was on. I checked the unit and found that the back is quite hot and has melted into a small…

Pros
  • Pleasant to use
Cons
  • Some difficulties

After jumping from router to router (used as hotspots) I think I've finally found one that I'll be using for a long time. These access points require controller software to be installed, preferably on a computer that is available 24/7. I chose Raspberry Pi (yes you can!). There are some great tutorials on setting up the Unifi software on the Pis that take no more than 10-15 minutes including boot time if everything is going as smoothly as mine. I started with a fresh NOOBS SD card image…
