I don't know if this is exactly the same design as it was in my elementary school 40 years ago but it works the way it is. Ideal for sharpening pencils. Sometimes it will eat through the pencil non-stop when the lead is sharp, and you have to stop when you find you're sharpening too long. But this is a minor annoyance and most of the time it works great. Much better than the little plastic parts we keep losing or the battery powered option.

Works very well. I put it against a wall with no problems. We flipped it because of a family member who isn't good at holding things with their right hand and it still works really well.
