High quality plus quality string

This is by far the best string on the winder with the largest hand hole. All others are slightly smaller (ideal for hands that don't fit me) or have a lower test string or no string at all. To really go up, the price jumps close to $100. Out of my league for winders. However, I am becoming a big fan of the winder. When the wind picks up and it's time to go, a quality winder is MUCH faster and a lot easier than trying to fight a traditional yo-yo winder. It's like the difference between a manual

What is the best kite accessory

This has skyrocketed our joy of kiting. The ease with which we can both release and reel in the line allowed us to use less force and have fewer knots and stretches. The clasp takes some getting used to and may require a sure instinct or two hands at first. We have several different brands and the ones with padlocks are very similar to this one. Although its implementation is good. Sizing is slightly smaller than others we have which is fine for my wife's smaller arms but a bit tight for my…

Brought to the beach, the ball bearings destroyed

This reel might be good for flying kites in a meadow but we have to go to the beach to get the right wind and I think the sand has the clogged ball bearings. It worked fine the first few times, then it stunk. It's quite frustrating trying to wrap a kite and put an end to it. I sprayed compressed air and then WD40 in the center and it seemed to work. 1 or 2 more times. Then it closed again. I ended up taking the entire center cassette apart to fill the ball bearings with oil and saw that a lot…

I bought this reel for the Kite Into The Wind UltraFoil 15, it might not be enough. Here are the problems we had. The bit problem was linear guide related. The line jumps slightly over the roller guide and eventually drags along the underside of the mount. This creates a wear point that can cut the string. What is needed here is an eye loop. The next problem I have is that my hand just barely fits in the inner handrail. That would be great for a small kiter but with 15 pressure it's enough that

I took a large 25ft octopus kite to the beach. There's a thick line to fly. Got this role to run it all I'm glad I did. Despite the lightweight and seemingly flimsy plastic construction, it held up well on that ride. I was concerned about the cheap locking mechanism but it worked great every time. I've launched and reeled in the kite multiple times. No real problems. The main complaints are that the handle is too small and doesn't fit in my hand. I don't have big hands either. But as a result I

Very Nice Winder (full review below)

If you want to raise or lower your finger quickly, it's a thumbs up. This is a full size roller suitable for large adult hands. Pros: It is made of very high quality parts. It's not cheap plastic etc and runs very quietly with a very good wheel and wheel lock. The lock is released at the push of a button and locked again by pressing the lock (difficult to describe). The design of the winder is absolutely worth 5 stars. Braided line (stronger than twisted) made of white and red Dacron (DuPont…

Ideal for kites and spinners

The reel is very well made and runs smoothly. The bearings are not sealed, but that's not a problem on the beautiful meadow I fly from. Throwing it on sandy ground or mud can cause problems. I was wondering if the holes for the thumb and rest of the hand are big enough for my average sized male hand and they are. Larger-than-average hands will feel cramped, but it seems the pinky can be hidden so only 3 fingers fit through the reel hub. I tried this and I think it will work fine if you have big

Excellent combination of features

This is a fairly standard product with minor variations between manufacturers. The Emmakytes version is almost at the high end of the price range. Here's why: round holes for lightness, no slots, all-metal lock, no plastic, braided line, no twine, 6 captive steel roller bearings, no bushing. Oh, and it comes in a sturdy, colorful drawstring pouch. The cord is regular polyester, not fancy aramid or polyethylene, but it's smooth, strong enough, and the red patches really make it stand out…
