The belt is too tight and poorly made.

Installed on 07 2.5i and 80 miles failed. Water pump failure. Was exchanged for another and broke after 100 km of use. Too short a toothed belt is considered the main cause of pump failures. I replaced all OEM parts to avoid further replacements and labor costs. I think it's hit and miss with these Chinese components.

Pros
  • Satisfied so far
Cons
  • Poorly thought out

Hiccups but okay you get what you pay for.

Easy install if you can follow the instructions, use a starter trick to loosen the crank bolt if you don't have a special tool. After 6,000 trouble-free miles, the water pump started leaking, not much, but enough to smell burning coolant on every ride. Will disassemble it when my new water pump gasket arrives. I read elsewhere that this is an issue with the gate kit. Otherwise it worked great.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Not all will fit

fits 2.0 model except water pump

fits my subaru impreza 2006 hatchback 2.0 4wd model from new zealand except water pump, correct number of pipes but still not exact fit. everything else fits perfectly and cars are much more attractive now. I'll have to see how it holds up for a real review but the local mechanic installed it with no problem. also a much cheaper option than the 550 I put for one in New Zealand, so for all Aussies or for example your specific Oceania sub model :)

NOT JDM, Made in China

Trust Chinese crap when you want to rebuild your engine but after you throw a few thousand in mine and trust the recommendations Gates used JDM hardware and then Having seen Made in China in most parts, I won't risk it. Only part of the JDM was one of the tensioners, the belt is American made and that's ok. but anything else is not worth the risk. I have since returned the parts and will be ordering Aisin parts instead as they position themselves as OEM replacements and the reviews show they…

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • Not sure

You should know that the screw hole in the lower right corner of this water pump is thicker than the OEM one. The 10mm bolt that attaches it to the aluminum block may be too short, so there may not be enough threading for the recommended tension. I had to buy a screw a little longer. Also, it had good instructions, seals, and a profile lock. Even comes with a pre-calibrated gap to protect the belt from the belt guides. Driven 3000 km so far, seems fine. used this on a 2006 Subaru 2.5L Impreza.

Pros
  • Ideal for a small house
Cons
  • Zero

Good product, just be careful.

I am a professional automotive technician. I have an ASE certificate. I specialize in Subarusas. I have used this Gates kit and many similar ones on other Subaru's. The value is excellent and everything fits well. I had the infamous water pump leak but 90% of the time they don't leak. However, I received this kit today and it was open, the water pump seal was bent and the rest of the components were scattered. I have never had this problem and have never had a problem with any of the products…

Epic Fail Gates, tried to bust my engine, don't buy

Edit 12/1/18 Replaced OEM idler. Less than 10,000 miles and Gates Spanner is leaking oil. Yes, I followed the bleed instructions prior to installation - funny that the Subaru OEM part doesn't have this problem. That thing is just junk and will ruin your engine, don't buy it. Faulty tensioner, sometimes the belt will slap hard at startup until the tensioner starts working again. One fine day, either not, or the belt will slip and my motor will die. Trust the 9% one star ratings, skip it and buy…

Did what I had to do until I did it.

It's been a few years since it was installed and it works fine. I try not to rate a product until it has been tested. Capable of surviving a full 90,000 with no direct component related issues, Gates is the perfect choice for OEM and regular (sometimes spirited) driving situations. I currently have a second set of 257k on my 2008 Impreza. And also a visual and very superficial comparison with replacement during my 90,000 change intervals. New and used components have the same functionality. In…
