Of course this required a drill with adequate power, but I used this drill to drill a few holes in 10" docking posts with ease. , so I'd advise making sure to turn it inside out when drilling from time to time; It's a lot easier than suddenly stopping him and twisting his wrists/arms. A variety of woods I've used it on. The starting screw on the front makes it very easy to start a hole instead of running all over the material. It comes in a nice reusable storage tube; together so you can put it back in the tube when you're done.
