In this opportunity I will talk about an institution created in 1960 by the Congress of the United States of America, whose main purpose would be to promote the progress of science; promote health, prosperity and national welfare and also to ensure national defense. This institution is the National Science Foundation (NSF), which is an independent federal agency.
Its organizational chart is composed of the Director of the institution, a deputy director and 24 members of the National Science Board (NSB) who are eminent persons, which meets six times a year to establish the general policies of the foundation. All the components of this organization chart are appointed directly by the president and must be ratified by the congress.
Its main projects are focused on the fields of Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics and Social Sciences. In addition to collaborating with the World Health Organization in areas such as food and water safety and the environment.
The NSF has among its main objectives to keep the United States at the forefront of discoveries in areas ranging from astronomy to geology and zoology.
NSF is currently the only U.S. federal agency with the capacity to conduct all non-medical fields of research.
With an annual budget of $8.5 billion by 2021, NSF is the funding source for approximately 25% of all research conducted by U.S. colleges and universities.
However, in its FY2022 budget request to Congress, the Biden administration seeks to increase the National Science Foundation's discretionary budget by 20% to $10.2 billion.
The request includes continued funding for major facilities under construction as NSF works to pin down cost increases and schedule delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
