Dorman 03006 Univ Brake Cable Review

2006 Toyota Tundra parking brakes do not hold at maximum setting. I was hoping the Dorman 03006 would help take out the slack and tighten the cable. The Dorman brake cable adjuster folded up on the first press of the brake pedal. The product could not withstand the tension of the cable.

Illustration is not correct. The instructions are useless. You need to flip the hook, pressing the rollers against the bottom of the cable so the hook pulls on the top of the cable as you tighten the nuts. I don't know if this will continue. I just installed it and today it worked but looks flimsy.

I ordered 3 of these brake adjusters. One arrived open with no adjusting nuts, they sent me a fourth. When I went to install I found that 3 of the 4 adjustment hooks were too long and the cable could not be adjusted. Overall, one out of four was usable. I wasted my time and money on junk. DO NOT BUY!

Great tool for tensioning any cord - boats, car brake cables, garden fence wire and tightening fence wire. I'm surprised it's not a hardware store item. Easy to use. Remember to oil them every year or two as they tend to rust but still seem to work fine. I wish they were in heavier sizes for larger ropes and cables.

Dorman Help! The brake cable adjuster is an example of a complete design and manufacturing error by design. Thin, soft, Chinese-embossed steel is so thin it spun in my hands without even trying. The J-bolt is also of poor quality. There's no way this clamp can do what it promises because it just doesn't have the power. Dorman needs to reconsider his name. I remember those cable adjusters from years ago and it's not what it used to be. It's useless.

Installed this imitation to remove (suck up) excess parking brake cable. Just by looking at the production technique I immediately contacted the manufacturer: Dorman Co. I was emailed back by a technician: Nick - that they are sold in large quantities and the quality/materials, tubular rivets etc - were first class. I cleaned and lubricated the handbrake rods, then removed the drums to clean and lubricate the pivots and automatic adjustments. The braking distance was still very long and the right cable didn't pull very much. Tightening the nut on the Dorman adjuster to the end of the thread lowered the right cable 12mm and shortened it by 6mm. Now both brakes pulled slightly when I lifted the brake lever two clicks.
