Broken belt tensioner

I was dying to install the hole tensioner pulley assembly but the shackle broke due to the threads so I just had to use the pulley itself. I suspect whoever sent it didn't see the broken thread.

Pros
  • Great for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Big and bulky

So far so good - Parts

I drive a 2007 FJ Cruiser. I have a mileage of 122,000 km, it whistled and rattled under the hood. I had yet to change the serpentine belt (I had a trip ahead of me and I had no idea how long the previous owner had the current one). When I took the belt off I checked the old tensioner and drive pulley and they were very gritty. I replaced the tensioner with this one. No more noise under the hood.

Pros
  • Easy Install
Cons
  • Volume

As always, quality parts from Gates.

Installed when I replaced the original water pump on my 2006 4Runner 4.0. I had a little trouble installing it, but everything went well. A lot of work, but it's crazy work here, so I'll probably save about $500 if I do it myself. Not for the average weekend handyman and if I wasn't so stubborn I probably would have taken the parts to the shop and had them do it all. The results are excellent. Hopefully enough for another 130,000, like original parts.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Some imperfections

Excellent replacement part

Excellent replacement part. The ONLY complaint is that the voltage is much higher than the OEM part. Before I had to replace this part, I was able to loosen and replace the serpentine belt myself with a 1/2" ratchet or pry bar. With all this tension, a part of me worries that it's too much tension for other parts like the alternator, power steering pump etc. I just hope Gates keeps the voltage within OEM specs.

Pros
  • Excellent price
Cons
  • Secret

I didn't want to replace the entire tensioner on my 2003 V6 4Runner, I used the wrong Gates idler pulley for a while and then decided to replace it. The reason is that with the wrong Gates idler pulley, the V-ribbed belt ends up on the edge of the pulley and the screw doesn't screw in as deeply as with the OEM idler pulley. That's why I didn't want to swap the whole tensioner. because everything still seemed fine, I just used a pulley from a new Gates tensioner. It was the perfect replacement…

Pros
  • Excellent Overall Performance
Cons
  • Not Bad
