I gave this item to my mother for Christmas! She has several videocassettes that she enjoys playing. We took it RIGHT out of the box and it DOES NOT WORK AT ALL! It wouldn't even turn on!

The DVD player in this double deck is normal, on par with budget players. The VCR in this deck is decent and on par with lower-end VCRs. As long as everything is fair. BUT the recorder doesn't burn Macrovision encoded DVDs (and most of them do), so don't expect to use it as a general purpose DVD burning method. The DVD player also does not play VCDs or SVCDs. This VCR/DVD player is the only one that has lasted this long. I have 4 boys under 10 and they are a bit rough. Ours eventually died when three DVDs were loaded at once. This is after several "repairs" mom. It was great and tolerated a lot of abuse. We tried two other players and neither of them worked with our TV. So we will order exactly the same.
