I have a very cheap heater that is always on and I was concerned that it would overheat my small (1.5 gallon) hospital tank. That works great! Great for keeping my hermit crabs in optimal conditions. I placed an aquarium fan on the cooling side and adjusted the settings so that it turns on at 89°. When it gets that hot, the alarm will sound for a second and turn on the fan to cool the tank down to the programmed 85° before shutting off. Reduces wear and tear on the Ultratherm at the back of the tank which can actually be inefficient, overheat and shut down when running at full power 24 hours a day. I didn't just want something to measure the temperature of my tank. I already have it. What I needed was a sensor that would turn on my tank's fan. Setup was a bit confusing - if you want Fahrenheit you have to press the settings button all the way down where you can select Celsius or Fahrenheit and then you can tweak the settings to your liking. So far so good. Cheap and in my opinion even better/more accurate than my JBJ Truetemp controller. I use for aquariums. I shrink the temperature sensor and put a rubber cap on the end to keep the sensor from direct exposure to water. This turned out to be a really great thermostat for an incubator I built for hatching chicken eggs. I connected the heating side to a heating lamp and the cooling side to a fan in case it gets hot. This unit also has alarms that can be set to sound when the area you are heating or cooling gets hot or cold.
