Edge Cracks - Kitchen & Dining

To explain the craftsmanship assessment, I've been using the same wooden cutting board for many (20+ or so) years. Nothing wrong with that but thought I'd treat myself to a new one from John Boos as they must be the best. Apply Boos Mystery Oil and Wax as directed on the receipt. Within a week a noticeable crack formed along the edge (see photo). In this first week the board saw little use and was not subjected to any form of abuse (standing water etc.). Live in Colorado so humidity is pretty…

Pros
  • Not Cheap But Decent
Cons
  • Concise Instructions

Definitely a second one from BoosBlock

New Year's gift opened and looked beautiful under the plastic wrap. Added door handle on one side. I started applying oil to the board and noticed a slight roughness. There was a dark stain on the grain of the wood, but it didn't completely go away when that side was planed. Turned the board over and started applying oil. I felt that this side is not smooth either. He had a cut all over the board from a planer. This board was to be rejected after a factory test and was never shipped new. Since…

Good, but not so good

I haven't used this board enough to say if it's going to split. But after three days of heavy use, slicing up a brisket in my grill with a 12-inch Dexter Russell slicer, this board is severely cut. So much so that I'm not sure she'll pass a health check. Two handcrafted boards I bought from Amish craftsmen a few years ago look brand new compared to this one. And these boards were used HIGH. I may not know my tree, but I hoped for the best from the maple. Update after a few weeks of use…

Pros
  • This is great
Cons
  • Vulgarity

Nice quality board. Proper maintenance takes time and $$

AT A GLANCE:. The board arrived well packaged and in perfect condition. It was just as beautiful as the photo PROS: The board is beautifully finished. It's heavy enough to stay in place even during the toughest felling. I did some serious research before making the investment and the board really lives up to my expectations. CONS: In order to season and maintain the board, you must purchase and use Mystery Oil and Board Balm monthly (or more often depending on usage). This keeps the board out…

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • No insurance

! DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM!

Great record that I bought on 12/18/17 as a Christmas present. The return deadline was 1/31/18 and it was discovered that the wooden planks began to come loose on the entire end on 3/14/18. When the block arrived it was big, heavy and attractive. I've been handling, cleaning and lubricating the block properly since day one. This item was defective after leaving the manufacturing facility and as I have personally been a woodworker in my past I can pinpoint the problem in the manufacture of this…

Broke in less than a year!

UPDATE: The wood is cracking! I took great care of this board and never left it wet for long periods of time. Mine, wipe off the water immediately. If I cut a juicy fruit on it, then I immediately wipe off the juice. And yet here we are, less than a year later, and the ties are unraveling. What a waste! I've always wanted a nice cutting board, but the prices at Williams Sonoma didn't interest me. I bought it for the price and also because it's solid wood so I know I'll get a lot of use out of…

Pros
  • Cool
Cons
  • Can't remember

This is the second size I have (20 x 15 x 1.25). The first one I had is over 2 years old and has no visible signs of cleavage. I only used mineral oil about once a month to beef up the board. I used it with raw meat because I know of a UC Davis study that shows you can use it for that purpose. I plan to use the second one to speed up the cooking process. I always clean and wipe after each use. I use Clorox wipes (no bleach) to ensure all bacteria are killed and use paper towels to dry them…

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Neutral

He must go when he cracks!

In February 2016 I bought two 15x20. One for meat, the other for herbs and vegetables. I use them but never abuse them and regularly treat them with Boos Wax and Boos Oil. Regarding cutting boards, you will surely be satisfied with their use. I bought an inch and a half thick and you will find them very comfortable. If you are like me you will never leave them with liquids on them or let them dry after washing them. I dry them with a towel and lean them against the wall to dry, exposing the top

Pros
  • Pretty packaging
Cons
  • Useless features
