K Edge Pro Chain Catcher Black Review

It's a lot slimmer and sleepier than I thought it would be, which is nice. As with all other reviews, the bolts break easily. I contacted the company and they were very easy to deal with and sent me replacement parts.

After reading here about issues with the 3mm screw that attaches the chain catcher to the bracket, I contacted K-Edge support. They replied that they had already switched providers due to the problem. After ordering, I found it surprisingly easy to install and adjust the derailleur after marking its location. Then I had no problems tightening the screw to 3Nm.

This is a really great system and relatively easy to install if you don't mind removing and reinstalling the derailleur. The only major issue I had was that the hardware that comes with it is very cheap/boring. It comes off very easily and I'm sure I used the correct size hex wrench because I tried both metric and imperial wrenches until I found one that fit perfectly. Very little torque was required to strip the insulation.

Overall design is good but as other reviews have mentioned the iron is too soft. I thought maybe people used the wrong tool or didn't use a torque wrench, but with a torque wrench and a new bit, the bolt comes out well before the packaged torque is reached. A product at this price point shouldn't require a trip to the hardware store to replace cheap screws. Either buy a different brand or plan on going to the store for replacement hardware. The seat tube on my wife's carbon fiber frame isn't round so the cheaper dog tooth chain catcher won't fit and the gap between the inner chainring and chain is so narrow that if it fell off the chain, it's almost an existential crisis. It just gets stuck so you're afraid of breaking the frame to get it out. It prevents this, which is why I consider it a necessary purchase. I have personally seen a dropped chain scratch the finish on a nice carbon frame as happened to my riding buddy. After that I started using them and now I have them on all four of my family's carbon road bikes. They are nicely made and match the bike, which is what I wanted. The chain catcher is very well made. It fits my bike perfectly and has perfect clearance for a bottle cage and I can reach it within 0.5mm of the chain when it's in the small ring. I only occasionally drop my chain so I don't know how effective this thing is, but if it protects my shiny new carbon frame I'm happy.
