Our little dog fits perfectly in a cage and should be comfortable but doesn't and struggles with the enclosure. So the question really is if the cage will hold an 18 pound dog that doesn't want to be caged. Short answer: no. Our little ball of joy opens the door without any problems. I am returning this cage because after several trips around town with my dog I feel that it is too narrow to be comfortable. Due to the rounded shape of the kennel, the floor space is much smaller than you might think. I measured the inside width at the widest point and it's only 13 inches (the listed width for the plus size is 18.6 inches). Only 12 inches wide at the door and at the other end.
