Description of Proto Pasta SSP11720 Polishable Stainless Steel

This stainless steel filled PLA can be Polished to look like Polished metal! it is also 2X the Density of PLA for substantial feeling prints. Material is matte Gray with a cast metal look. Can be Polished with proper Tools to a semi-reflective finish. Processing is comparable to standard PLA. No heated bed required. Process may be less consistent on smaller nozzles (<. 4mm) and/or Bowden Type machines. We recommend printing this material at 190c-230c using a 4 mm or larger nozzle. Please Note that this filament is more brittle than normal PLA and requires more careful handling to prevent breaking. Designed and manufactured in the USA with quality and customer service as a top priorities. USA sourced packaging and labor.

Not Worth the Investment

After trying this product I was disappointed with the results. The finish on my 3D printed object wasn't as smooth as I had hoped and the material required a lot of polishing. This product is marketed as an industrial and scientific option but it didn't live up to the expectations..

Pros
  • None.
Cons
  • Required a lot of polishing, not worth the investment.

The key takeaway is that while at least 3 other competitors are selling metal-filled PLA composites with copper, brass, bronze, etc., there is simply no other competitor (to my knowledge) that offers readily available PLA mixed with iron powder. Luckily, Proto-Pasta's Magnetic Iron PLA is pretty good. In my experience, printing with it can be either easy or impossible, depending on various factors. For me, PLA…
