I received my smoke alarm on January 30, 2018. Installed and tested. On March 9, 2018, rags soaked in kerosene caught fire in my basement. The house was full of smoke. When I called 911, the cheap smoke alarms went off in my house in the nest, not at home. Later I checked the app and it said it was no problem. When tested, it still says it's working correctly, but apparently it isn't. I have to say I love the thermostat but I am very disappointed with the smoke alarm.

Pros
  • Pleasant to use
Cons
  • Only available in black

No problems for 6 months, then SMS notification at 5am, 2 hours vacation left, due to smoke, then smoke subsided. A friend checked for fire, thank goodness, nothing (a really nice person came to see me at 6am!) and no more false alarms until first night home, exhausted, fire alarm went off twice at 2am. So, two big false positives in one week, read every month about opening and dusting as a possible solution - no. The 3rd gen should be able to tell you it's a bug or dust during normal waking…

I should have listened to the 1 star reviews.

I'm here to tell you to read and avoid these 1 star reviews. I thought Nest would solve the false alarm problem and bought 5 of these. Now, 6 months later, I run across the house to turn off the fire alarm in the master bedroom. There's no smoke anywhere. there is no fire There is no steam. no dust There are no mistakes. I manage to silence it and 10 minutes later the same thing happens again. Only this time, it alerts all Nest Protects, wakes up a sleeping baby, and drives my house crazy. What

Poor quality - fireproof

I bought three of these units expecting them to work better than they actually are. One block continues to report there is smoke in the room, although there is no sign of smoke. Other blocks do not report when one of the blocks is in alarm mode. I contacted Nest about my issue and they advised me to send a new device. Instead, they sent batteries. When I called back to speak to them, they told me that my device was out of warranty and that there was no one who could help me resolve my issue. I…

So basically works as a $10 smoke/carbon monoxide alarm

This product doesn't give me the phone alerts advertised as an option. So it basically works the same as a $10 smoke/carbon monoxide alarm. I tried calling Nest tech support and they replaced my detector 2 times and still no phone notifications (SMS or emails) when an alarm goes off despite having the Nest app open on my phone. I tried this on both iPhone and Android phone and still no notification. Tech support guys are useless. Every time I call her I spend over an hour on the phone. Do not…

Warning, known issues with Thermal Runaway.

Beware, there are known issues with these Nest smoke alarms going into thermal runaway mode. The bad news for a smoke alarm is that it catches fire. My Nest Protect used the original Energizer lithium batteries that came with the unit. My Nest Protect has started sounding a low battery smoke alarm. I removed the device and removed the batteries. One of the batteries was nuclear hot. Like it's so hot I can't resist. I quickly took it outside fearing it would explode like cell phones did a year…

Garbage. Didn't work during the fire.

UPDATE January 2020: The oven's self-cleaning function has been activated, creating a lot of particles in the air. The cheap old school detector I bought after the Nest crashed responded to partial files. The three REPLACEMENT nest detectors do not. Damn. Waste of over $300. save your money Serious. Original review: I have three of these devices. Two with batteries, one wired. I was toasting tortillas with cheese in the oven and for a minute I forgot. Luckily I was sitting next to the stove and

Avoid Nest Protect (2nd gen) - Save money, time and peace of mind

READ 1-star reviews - they're more reliable than 4 or 5-star reviews. A 3-pack of 2nd generation NEST Protect devices released in June 2017. Following NEST's instructions, all devices set up flawlessly - connected to my 2.4GHz WiFi and connected to the internet. With the iPhone app I was able to see my NEST thermostat and 3 NEST Protects. The devices worked flawlessly until early 2019, when all of the Protect devices (and my NEST thermostat!) kept disconnecting from the 2.4GHz WiFi and never…
