just keeps beating for USB hubs

so this is an updated post. It started normally and then died about 6 months later. Painful during a working video presentation. I set it aside and set it to heat (it gets very hot). I couldn't get it to work for about a month after that. Out of boredom I put it back in about a month later and it worked. So I left it running and it went off again at the wrong time about a month later (was I expecting anything different?) So now it's off and I'll try UNI. Super disappointment for something that…

It was slow there at first. Now there is Fast

Let me start by saying that this ethernet adapter does exactly what I need it to do: provide gigabit ethernet transfer speeds. My problem: While trying to restore a disk image backup on my Dell Inspiron laptop, I found that my built-in ethernet card is a 100BaseT only device. The Ethernet transfer rate was extremely slow and it took more than 18 hours for the recovery process to complete. I installed the Startech USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter and the transfer speed has improved…

Better buy a new motherboard.

In Windows 10 I just plugged it into the USB3.0 port, connected an ethernet cable to it, turned on the computer, 2 lights on the device lit up shortly after booting up. The internet icon has been enabled on the taskbar screen. There is internet, I checked the speed; 90 MPS down, 26 downloads. Got 25 MPS down, 20 up with USB2 and WIFI. The ethernet circuit on this motherboard stopped working, then I got a new MB, but I used it on another computer. StarTech came with an installation disc, but Win

Not suitable for labs (from GNS3 to real hardware)

I bought this with the intention of connecting my virtual network environment to my real hardware for lab purposes. This mostly works for common things like connecting a computer to an ethernet cable to connect to the internet. The issue occurs when attempting to connect a virtual and real lab environment. I have fluctuating interfaces between my virtual router and the physical layer 3 switch. I've tried many configurations and routing protocols, but the hanging interfaces persist. I won't let…

Doesn't work with Mac

Sorry, this adapter doesn't work with Mac. The chipset is an Asix AX88179 which is not included in macOS. So you need a third party driver. StarLink comes with a CD, but who uses a CD for drivers these days? My Mac doesn't even have a CD drive. It's not good form to ask for strange third-party drivers for what is supposed to be a generic product. Something as simple and straightforward as a USB to Ethernet adapter doesn't require a third-party driver. I don't want to jeopardize my Mac's…

This made my speed tests worse

Easy to use. I thought my laptop doesn't support gigabit bandwidth, the problem turned out to be that the cable was CAT 5 and not CAT 6. Yes, the adapter made the connection a little faster with the wrong network cable. CAT 5 does NOT support high speed transmission. I switched to a high-speed CAT-6 cable and actually got BETTER throughput WITHOUT an adapter. This product is best suited for users who do not have network input on their laptop and need to use USB. Will come back because I don't…

This is amazing stuff!

I bought a laptop a few years ago but unfortunately it only had a 10/100 card when it arrived. Since I was using a laptop in a fixed position, I tried upgrading the Wi-Fi card to get the full 1GB of service from my ISP. I use my laptop in such a way that I get drop outs on a certain program I'm using because wifi as you know is not full duplex. I gave up until I came across this device. I wasn't entirely convinced and thought it was just another trick. I plugged the device into my USB 3.0 port,

Easy install and smooth operation

My almost 10 year old Lenovo ThinkPad W700's built in ethernet adapter burned out in a lightning strike a few years ago. Luckily, the Wi-Fi adapter wasn't damaged, so I still had internet and network access, but at Wi-Fi speeds. This wasn't a problem until about 18 months ago, when the W700 was replaced by the Lenovo ThinkPad P71, pushing the Lenovo W700 to the top. Our house has a metal roof and WiFi throughput in this part of our house is significantly reduced. Not a big deal using the…
