Tripp Lite PR20 Supply Output Review

I am using this to power a 50 watt VHF radio. It's been up for about a month now and seems to be working fine. It seems worth the money.

I ordered this for my new shop, it arrived dented so I took a needle nose pliers and took some events that were dented on top and pulled it out a bit because I was tired of Ordering things didn't work! So I did it, let's see how it turns out

I used this PS to power a Yaesu FT-857 a few weeks ago (about 14 months). Now every time you turn it on it blows the internal 20 amp fuse. The tech said it was a diode/rectifier and shouldn't be repaired. I could have bought a much cheaper Chinese PS but I went with this one because I expected it to last at least 20 years. I have a 30 year old 20 amp Radio Shack PSU and at least 5 other PSUs that are over 10 years old. This is the first linear power supply that let me down. Now the radio works…

Please note that Tripp Lite DC power supplies are designed for ICS (Discontinuous Communication Service) power and NOT for continuous power. This PR20 device is actually rated for 16 amps continuous and 20 amps at ICS. This matches the spec that came with the device itself, but isn't listed in the Revain description. 3 seconds. I have since ordered a PR30 which is rated for 24 amps continuous. The device itself looks good, but I had no real experience of using it until the PR30 device arrived.

When I first turned on the PR20, sparks came out of the vents. The wire from the 120VAC input to the transformer has a short to the case. I repaired the bare wire with heat shrink tubing and the PR20 worked. When powered up, the PR20 emits a continuous audible 60Hz hum that can be heard at least 10 feet away. centimeters behind the case back. A safer alternative would be an insulated connector pin.
