Great for ham radio but won't work out of range.

This radio will NOT transmit out of band unless you program it to do so. The instructions for unlocking the radio are terrible, I downloaded the radio band opening software on 3 different computers (windows vista, windows 7 and windows 10) and the software didn't install properly on any of the computers. If you need a radio that only works on the ham radio bands, this is a great deal. If you want it to have a MARS/CAP mod, buy it elsewhere and program it.

Pros
  • Handy Item
Cons
  • Attenuation

Great radio for little money

There are no limits to equipment spending in amateur radio. I think this TYT is pretty much a replica of the Yeasu FT-9800. You can even use the same programming cable. The programming, while a little whimsical, was fairly easy once I got used to the layout. I mainly use this radio on 2 meters and 70 centimeters because where I am there isn't much going on on 10 meters. antennas I was able to tease almost real 50 watts out of the little guy. The mining gear that the car/truck comes with is…

  • Easy to read control panel

Fun ham radio suitable for portable audio and video

I really like this little phone. I've been using it for a long time and it's very reliable. I've read of people having problems with the speaker disconnecting. This wasn't a problem for me, but I hooked up a $20 Cobra CB speaker at a rest stop and it connected right away and was a huge improvement in sound quality. Haven't had a chance to use it on 10m or 6m yet, I need antennas for the bands I don't have. I run the radio as a base station from a 12v power supply using rg8x coax to a VHF/UHF…

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Slightly torn

Quality Control None

I had 3 TYT TH-9800 radios. Two were purchased from Revain and both were returned. The first one I bought from the ham store still works great. Both Revain devices had extremely poor audio quality that could not be resolved. I have a general class license and no matter how the radios were programmed the audio always sounded like it was a few kilohertz out of frequency, pretty much the same as the sideband noise when tuned. As I said, I still have the original unit that I bought and I love it. .

Compact quad-band setup, entry-level VHF MODE on 10, 6, 2m, 70cm

Stick to the original software that comes with the purchase of a radio. Original OEM software Win XP or 7th USB driver disk. enabled, but drivers are automatically installed via the tyt software cable installed for WIN 7. Activation guide included for MARS/CAP license holders. Muffled sound is a microphone condenser element, not a radio receiver, but a mini condenser. Everything listed is best to the seller's knowledge. You'll have to work on a longer mic cable as the others have a plastic…

Pros
  • Ideal for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Uncertain

The perfect VHF transceiver! Although only lasted 4 years

(had to deduct a star on 09/14/2021 due to its short lifespan) This is the perfect FM transceiver for many bands and many services. The Plus version is almost perfect. AM reception is more accurate. VHF reception is probably the most sensitive reception I have ever experienced from a small transceiver available. Manual programming is actually relatively easy with the updated Plus version manual. I didn't order a data cable to begin with and was able to program the bandwidth, alpha tag…

Pros
  • Very impressive
Cons
  • Dull packaging
