Just what I needed

You won't be disappointed. I bought it to lift two windows (about 230 pounds each) into their openings. I was a little nervous about the "warning" NO vertical elevator (and the windows are $1800 each). I know Warn says NO vertical lift, but he did a great job with both windows. Just make sure the clutch/freewheel is turned to the locked position. And as luck would have it, I used it again to raise a 217-pound deer in my shed. I wish I had known about this tool many years ago.

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • Doubtful

Limited usability for external accessories

Seems well made. Used once to drag the dock onto a 5 degree coast. The 500 pound estimate is incorrect as it only applies when the spool is almost empty and the effective diameter is small. I started clicking the clutch limiter quickly. Another issue is that the entire unit twists in your hand under load as the cable is wound on the spool asymmetrically. This last issue limits the amount of cord you can pull in, and I didn't have the strength to hold the device upright (I'm a big guy). You…

More train than three

I had it for over a year and never got to use it. The other morning my town car wouldn't start and it went into my shed and I couldn't jump off, two of my friends offered to help push it out and because the slope is so small the three of us couldn't even rock the 6000lb car . I remembered the drawing works, after setting it up I told my friends not to stand in front of the machine. I was expecting the drill to change pitch, once it starts pulling it doesn't slow down, the big machine starts…

Great for one time use but weak driveshaft limits life

I have the 500lb version. First the good: This thing is lightweight, portable, and powerful. For those who think it's too weak - add a locking and lifting system and this 500 lb winch becomes a 2000 lb winch. Combined with a 4:1 block and a hoist, tree straps and a 6 foot pry bar, I was able to easily move half a dozen wheelbarrow sized boulders across my steep yard. Cons: When you pull full force, your drill puts pretty good torque on the 5/16-inch hex winch driveshaft. Unfortunately, this…

The Warn winch is excellent!

I've been looking at the ads and pictures and thought it looks good but maybe a little useless. But that's a warning, so it's worth a look. It arrived today and I took it to the workshop to see what I have and everything is fine. I set up my ramp and simulated the situation where I had to load my non-working snowblower up a steep ramp and into my service vehicle. I turned it on at the ramp with a 20 year old 2 speed cordless drill - at high speed. No voltage. It's faster than I expected and a…

Better than Pullzal for my application

Sitting on the fence between this and the Pullzal it completely outperformed the wireless Pullzal for retrieving firewood. I had both and returned the Pullzal. The spool pull function and 30 foot wire were the most important features compared to the Pullzal. I used a 20 volt Dewalt 996 drill in 3rd gear (2000 rpm) for most 45 degree pull ups for 175 feet to the buck and split station. I heat myself exclusively with wood and live on the edge of a steep hill full of firewood. I used to use a…

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • No automatic

After reading some reviews I was concerned that this winch would be very slow but if you have a high torque, high RPM drill it is quite fast. The ratio of shaft revolutions to spool/drum revolutions is 77.6 to 1, so I was doing 41.9 spool/drum revolutions per minute with my 3250 rpm cordless drill. The drum is 1.79 inches in diameter when empty, which translates to a circumference of 5.625 inches or about 19.6 feet per minute when unloaded. Winding speed increases as the winding progresses…
