I tried it as a switch. but the cabling problems proved insurmountable. The wires are pushed through the hole and held between two copper surfaces by friction. They don't "snap" into place like a normal light switch and just pull out. In my ceiling fan application the connection was "down" and the vibration of the fan caused the wires to come out easily. I pulled the chain out of the chain mechanism on my Hunter fan and tried to take it apart and replace the chain myself. I've been able to do this up to this point, but haven't been able to re-spring the chaincase block so the chain retracts as soon as I pull on it. I had the same problem mentioned in another review with the wires staying in their holes and making good contact (this requires set screws, not inserts).
