A do-it-yourself option

The Amprobe RLD-1 Refrigerant Leak Detector is a great idea for checking if there is a refrigerant leak in your HVAC system. Calling an on-site HVAC service technician can be expensive. The only problem I have is that every time I check I can't find any leaks. So I can say that I was either told 100% that my system failed (both in high and low mode), or. this is a complete failure. I will say it worked as my HVAC system was working properly. If anything changes I will update my review!

Better than soap for A/C tools and equipment

Not only does it work where you can't see, it's sensitive enough to detect smaller leaks than you could with soap, even where where you could do it can see only a few cubic millimeters of gas per minute. I tested it for an AC leak in a neighbor's truck that has been leaking for over a year with no new charge, so a very slow leak and he found the leak right away. The basic operation is very simple. The instructions explain some of the subtleties that are important to know if you're going to beโ€ฆ

Great tool - easy to use and easy to handle

Great machine. Must be very close to the leak, you can't just point it at the fridge to see if there is a leak in the fridge. But you can visually inspect potential leaks and see if there's anything to worry about. It worked great in tests and the test material provided made it possible. I like how easy it is to use the device. I also like the very sturdy case it comes in. You want to know that your tools stay safe in the field. This one will! I also like that it runs on regular batteriesโ€ฆ

C bad batteries. PSU good

I had no problems with false alarms on this thing, as one reviewer noted. I'm very careful not to meet him, but I'm not sure if that would matter. I only have a few systems to test and luckily they came up negative, but I like the specs given. I also like that it comes with a carrying case and a calibration solution. The case isn't fancy, but it's almost always welcome, especially if you have extra stuff you want to keep with the main unit (like a calibration solution). This is not anโ€ฆ

There is a slight learning curve. Easy to use, finds leaks quickly.

Unlike many other leak detectors (e.g. natural gas) where it turns on and works, you really need to LEARN how to use this probe. I watched some online videos and read the manual before using it. The detector has a warm-up time and must be in the room where it will be used. As a result, it adapts to the filling level of the surrounding gas - it is extremely sensitive. If there is a leak and it "heats up" in another room, you'll find that it beeps like crazy in the room where there's a leak, notโ€ฆ

Feels solid, well built. Seems accurate.

My husband's family owns a heating/cooling business in Canada. They develop their own products and have a fairly extensive range of products. He managed their research and development department and is therefore very familiar with the tools. When tested, our 2 window units and air conditioner found no leaks. Since we have no issues with either, I'm inclined to assume it reads accurately. Using the supplied test kit, it performed with flying colors. His comment: The flexible probe makes itโ€ฆ

Detects minor fuel leaks as well as all refrigerants used today

This instrument detects all types of refrigerants commonly used including those found in my 1966 car as well as a modern car. In addition, it detects small fuel leaks such as those that can easily occur on boats and general aircraft and are almost impossible to find. The unit comes with two C-type alkaline batteries and an AC adapter for use in the garage. The package includes a hard plastic carrying case, which is important due to the fragility of the sensor probe. An audible alarm and LEDโ€ฆ

I spend a lot of time in my friend's heated, air conditioned, fully stocked garage. We work on our vehicles and projects for a select group of classic car owners. One of the toughest problems we face is running the air conditioners on older cars (1980's and earlier) at full capacity. We usually call in a local air conditioning expert to diagnose our problems - mainly to find leaks and refill the system. When this tool appeared on Vine (a test product), I called my friend and asked if he thought
