Works great as a Macbook Pro Dock

I take my 15" rMBP Gen 1 to work. In both cases I have 30" monitors, USB 3.0 backup drives, wired gb ethernet and a wireless keyboard and mouse plus a usb hub with some other goodies.connecting all the cables going back and forth was a hassle.bought one of these for work about a year ago and it worked fine.none of the issues noted by some reviewers.Connects fine.HD backup spins up, monitor connects, keyboard works etc.I haven't tried booting from it and it's not really necessary.I have on itโ€ฆ

Pros
  • 1 FireWire 800 port
Cons
  • I'm concerned

This Device is Both Good and Bad

The good thing is that it's physically well designed and built and has most of the features I wanted. I really wanted to like this device. However, it has some disadvantages. Firstly, despite the large current converter, the Express Doc cannot deliver enough current to reliably power a USB stick, Apple Superdisk or iPad. This is disappointing as it limits the usefulness of the device. The biggest issue for me, however, is that the Express Dock doesn't create an audio device, so there's no wayโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Connect 8 separate devices to your laptop with a single Thunderbolt cable (cable sold separately). Compatible with Thunderbolt 2
Cons
  • Not bad, but...

Works well for video + gigabit ethernet, high performance requirements

This dock serves my needs well. I wanted a docking station for my wife's 2011 MacBook Air so she could use it at home and only need two cables - power and Thunderbolt. I currently have a DVI monitor and gigabit ethernet connected to a docking station. The DVI monitor uses a Mini Displayport DVI cable. Gigabit Ethernet just flies - I'm seeing a maximum transfer rate of around 120MB/s and sustained speeds in excess of 100MB/s. I wanted a docking station because I needed video out and full gigabit

Pros
  • 1 gigabit ethernet port
Cons
  • Available in black only

Two hits and you're out of action

I ordered this just after a brand new MacBook Pro arrived , tempted by the prospect of being able to unplug and plug in external monitors, Ethernet port, headphones and USB accessories with one cable. Arrived first and. not registered at all. My laptop didn't notice its existence. A quick look at the power supply showed why: The green LED did not light up. Borrowing a power supply from a colleague's Belkin Thunderbolt Dock confirmed that my own power supply was DOA. I blamed bad luck andโ€ฆ

Pros
  • 1 Thunderbolt port for connecting to a laptop or Thunderbolt devices (daisy chain up to 5 devices from a single port)
Cons
  • Annoying
