The op amp is dirty, needed resoldering

So if the item is intact it works fine, these converters are one of my favorites. I turned it on and was greeted by the OCP LED giving the error. I found the schematic and found the op amp that was part of the circuit, I looked closely and the soldering didn't look right. I pressed my finger on the op amp and it worked. The pins on the left were soldered while the right side lay slightly over the tracks and not touching. Soldered the op amp flush to the board and it worked.

Pros
  • Good product for the price
Cons
  • Ugly packaging

No inrush current adjustment

Works great. I was able to get 89V at 715W with a 36V supply. There is a serious drawback that limits its use in most applications. There is an output current limit, but no input inrush current limit, and the inrush current to the capacitors is enormous, enough to burn out the XT60 connector (rated 60A continuously and up to 180A for a few seconds). I can add a thermistor to the input, but that would increase the quiescent power by ten watts. There is no good way to provide power without…

Can be used as MPPT for PV water heating

I use it to heat PV water. It turns out that the maximum supply voltage (Vmp) of the modules is fairly constant, independent of the sun's irradiance and the angle of the sun, so a low input voltage protection can be used to keep the modules at Vmp. In my case it's about 28V. I set the output voltage to 100V so the boost converter tries to sink as much current as possible into the resistance of the hot water tank. I have a 12.6 ohm resistor (including wiring resistance) at 4kW. The CC…

Cheap lithium battery charger

These devices are clearly intended for DIY enthusiasts as they do not come with instructions. I use them to charge lithium batteries and they work well for that purpose. Combined with the computer power supply that many people already have, this device can easily output several hundred watts (12V/25A). Things get a little more interesting when you daisy chain multiple power supplies to get 24V+ as that gives you more power. It is possible to find used server power supplies that are compact and…

Pros
  • Sleek design
Cons
  • Good but not great

Update: 4/29/2021 downgraded to one star. Worked for a while maybe 6 hours total with new 20A fuses then this afternoon no bumps just driving on a flat road for the grandson who blew again. Then I replaced them and immediately blew them all. I checked the circuit board and didn't notice anything, but showed a direct short to ground with a multimeter. I have just ordered an alternative design from a different supplier and manufacturer. Probably normal gain, maybe for 10A but not close to the…
