Just a few months after changing the belt, I started hearing a horrible squeaking noise under the hood of my 1999 Ford Explorer. Thinking it couldn't be the belt, I went and replaced the tensioner arm and idler pulley. I started the engine and the horrible squeaking returned. I read something and realized that even if you go to a parts store and tell them your year, make and model, it doesn't mean that the strap options they offer you are the same length. I went ahead and replaced the Dayco belt, which was only a few months old, with a Goodyear Gatorback. I compared the two straps and saw that the Gatorback was about half an inch shorter. Once installed, the evidence was how much lower the tensioner arm sat. Needless to say, the second I started the car the car started and didn't squeak. It's been like this for several weeks now.
