I chose 3/8" ID although most of my vehicles have a 5/16" steel pipe that they mate with. Ends with a small amount of oil. On one 5/16" tubing that has a flare at the end, the 3/8" tubing is slipped onto the flare with a little oil without cutting the inside of the tubing or crossing the flared end, and using a worm drive. Hose clamp, it seals the smaller hose behind the sleeve anyway. A 3/8" hose instead of a 5/16" hose leads to a lower pressure drop in the oil cooler/transmission lubrication circuit even in winter when the oil is cold.
