Easy and quick installation, suitable for wireless access points

I did a lot of research on a range of wireless access points and routers, but ultimately decided the D-Link DWL-900AP+ would be the right choice to me. One of the deciding factors is the 256-bit encryption, the highest available. From the moment I got the box home to the moment I walked through the house surfing the internet on my laptop, it took a full 15 minutes. And I didn't have a single mistake along the way. Of course, I've been using wired networking in my home for a number of years, and

Worked five days.

I've done a lot of research on wireless access points and this one got a very high rating. It was easy to install and fairly easy to set up using the D-Link web interface. Unfortunately, the device only worked properly for five days. Then I updated the firmware - and it went downhill. Signal strength became very inconsistent: excellent one moment, good another, then bad, etc. It was present everywhere, even when the wireless client remained stationary. I spent hours fixing it. The D-Link tech…

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Poor performance

I installed the DWL-900AP+ on an existing "wired" network to connect a Dell laptop to a D-Link DWL-650+ PC Card. The DWL-900AP+ is connected to a D-Link hub that is connected to my network server. The installation/configuration is very easy! I did my homework first! I read all the reviews and documentation I could find on the net, read the instructions CAREFULLY a few times, then went through everything step by step! Everything worked PERFECTLY! The DWL-900AP+ has been running CONSTANTLY 24…

Run, don't walk, away from that dog!

"The default IP address for the DWL-900AP+ is 192.168.0.50 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. You must assign a static IP address in the same range as the DWLAP+ IP address." These instructions appear on the front page of D-Link's ridiculously titled Quick Install Guide. If you intuitively understand what you need to do to comply with this policy, you may be able to run this product. If not, forget to get help from technical support. The response time for questions sent via email is 24 hours,

A great performer as an access point, but a poor client.

This D-Link product makes a great access point, works fairly well in bridge mode and as a (fixed) client. I bought two of these devices for the bridge function. I'm connecting two small LANs in different houses that are about 300 meters apart. It works very well! I'm getting some dropped packets through the bridge, probably because it can't support full ethernet speed, or maybe I'm getting random interference from somewhere. However, unlike almost all other wireless clients in "client" mode…

D-Link AirPlus DWL-900AP+

I received the item in a postal envelope and the seller sealed it with tape. The packaging was badly crumpled and the D-Link was broken on a corner of the case. I have contacted the seller. The seller was quick to respond and agreed to refund my money along with the return shipping cost. The seller was very sorry about this and said it was his fault because of the packaging used. I received a refund for the product and the original shipping cost but not the $11.05 return shipping cost which I…

Up and running in 5 minutes

This is a good product if you already have a broadband internet connection and router. I have a Linksys and didn't want to risk anything that works. Some people have complained that you need to change your computer's TCP/IP settings, particularly to allow access to hotspot settings. I found it much easier to change the router's IP address to 192.168.0.1 on the local network (Linksys default is 192.168.1.1). Thus, the fixed IP address of the Dlink access point is compatible with the DHCP…

  • Good thing

Easy to set up, difficult to get good reception

Good: can reach up to 95% of wired speed under certain circumstances, web interface, flexible settings Bad: poor documentation, sometimes very sensitive to placement Circumstances, I find it difficult to choose the right settings. I am using this hotspot on a Mac network. I received it because of the 22Mbps bandwidth available on other similar D-Link products that I have also purchased. He's in a difficult position to get a broadband cable internet connection to the house across the street…
