Was glad to get this today. I use a lot of drill bits in my job and after a while it can get quite expensive to buy new drill bits to replace broken or dull ones. Following the tutorial video I was able to sharpen a small 1/8" drill bit, a broken 3/16" drill bit (once you get the basic shape, reorient the drill bit so you are cutting at the right angle) and I sharpened a Dewalt 3/8 pilot drill bit - it returned to normal after the step portion dulled. All in all, this product is amazing! It…

Pros
  • Price
Cons
  • Some defects

The drills are not very complicated, but difficult to explain. The manual tries a paragraph or two but fails. Problems: Chuck doesn't always pick up small parts. Either the bit rotates, or one of the cartridge's fingers goes to the side. The manual is TERRIBLE and explains how the angle selection works. The split point only works on 3/8 drills and above. I gave it up. - An even sharpening of smaller drills is basically not possible. Pros: - If you ONLY drill in wood, this is great! (But if you…

If you have bits like mine you may need to level and sharpen 3 .

Received my Drill Doctor 500 today and sharpened about 50 bits. He didn't lose strength or make a mistake. As many others have said, read the manual and watch the video before using it. The video shows the actual product and installation markings which cannot be shown in the manual. A few things I learned for ease of use, firstly the manual says to count the number of turns on the chuck. I have found that the grinding wheel is easier to hear and if it makes very little noise at full rotation…

Convenient to use for power tool parts and accessories

Before buying, I was wondering if it was possible to sharpen short bits. But I suspect not very many people know that there are "short drills" such as the cobalt drill used in machine shops. Now I know for those who have the same questions. Any length bits can be installed in the chuck, but short bits "2-1/4" or shorter" will not allow you to rotate it once it is installed, so you will have to slide it forward, make sure the angle with its "Shortest" part between the two flutes of the drill…

Great addition to the shop

Needless to say, being a woodcarver I've accumulated quite a few drills. I chose the Drill Doctor instead of replacing a lot of bits. Honestly? This has to be one of the best "money well spent" I've bought in a while. The instructions are clear and easy to understand and the machine itself is very easy to use, just follow the instructions. I keep it handy and sharpen my tips as I use them (instead of making a bunch in one sitting). I didn't realize how boring a lot of my beats had become, but…

What can I say!: Power Tool Parts & Accessories

After years of blunting bits and running to the hardware store to replace them, I had to try this piece of equipment. Eight months ago I screwed deck boards to the frame of the trailer (to cover the front and sides). The solid steel frame ate six 5/16" drill bits for a total of 23 holes drilled. That was the last step for me. I have owned this item for over 7 months now and it has saved me a fortune on drill bits. I've spent a lot of time this winter (Michigan winter this year) sharpening all…

You don't need to buy a drill anymore!

Received it today and am very happy with this purchase. Despite some comments from other reviewers, the instruction manual is comprehensive, easy to understand and fully explains how the Drill Doctor works. I had no problem setting the vertex angle to 118 or 135 degrees. I resharpened about 34 bits from 3/32" to 1/2" that were blunt and changed the angle from one of the 118 degrees to a 135 split point. In total it took about 1 hour 15 minutes. After that they were all sharp to spec, cutting…
