Decades of engineering and interface

I purchased the ETREX 22x in July 2020 for two major hikes in California. Unfortunately, the device is more trouble than it's worth. It's clunky, heavy, always on. The screen is difficult to read (very dim) and has a joystick reminiscent of a 1990's Blackberry phone. It's not at all intuitive with dozens of screens of useless functions you thumb through to get to the vital information you really want and need. It wasn't cheap either; ($200+). I had high expectations for the price, but it's "low

Suitable for hiking, cycling.

I only bought this about a week ago and have just tried out a few short hikes with this eTrex22x. As this is my first GPS it will take me a few days to figure it out. I kept debating between the two GPSs for a month. One is primarily for cycling and the other is an eTrex22x primarily for hiking. Another GPS designed primarily for cycling costs about $100 more and has a larger touchscreen. Like a smart phone. Since I was mainly looking for a GPS for hiking/biking tours, I decided on the…

It's very hard to find something you like

I received it about 2 days ago with the intention of using it for hiking. To say I'm not impressed would be an understatement. The only good thing I can say about it (and that's just a superficial observation) is that the battery life seems decent and the GPS signal is relatively strong. Let's get to the bad. The most obvious problem I've found is that the addresses don't work. First it will ask you to enter a state or province which it will never find and you can't go any further (screenshot…

Very happy with it

I've been using the eTrex 10 with a paper chart for about a year. When they announced the topoActive map with it, I decided to give it a try. The additional functions are great. The attached image is a topoActive map. Hovering over a street displays the street name. Shows the distance and direction to the location. If you click on "Select" you will get the details of the selected location. This morning I made waypoints and a route from a map and went through it with a compass. Very accurate…

Bad hardware and software

Garmin is terribly disappointing. What they have created here is a product straight out of the Blackberry era. As far as I can see they don't offer anything close to a modern device in the wearable market. It's bad hardware combined with bad software. i give it back It burns me that I also have a Garmin in the car, which is also worse, and that I didn't return it. Never! Here are just some of the issues I've encountered in my short time as an owner: The screen is tiny. I need glasses for…

Classic Case of Know What You're Buying

It seems that many negative reviewers didn't understand what they were buying when they ordered it. This is not and is not intended to be a replacement for your Waze/Google Maps. Some of the so-called disadvantages, which are advantages and not faults are: 1. Bulky. Yes, it's hefty for its size, but it'll also take a lot more stress than your slim smartphone - even with the Otterbox. The shape also makes it more comfortable to hold in hand.2. No touch screen. Have you ever tried using your…

Reliable Basic GPS: Sport and Handheld GPS

4 stars because 5 would be perfect. NO NAVIGATION INSTRUMENT is 100% 100% perfect. I've been using it for a few weeks for running and driving around town, as well as hiking in the White Mountain National Forest. IT DOES A GOOD WORK FOR THE MONEY! HAVE TO KNOW. My device will not work until updates are installed. The open source map is a GLOBAL (entire planet) shaded relief map. That's a huge amount of data. Plan to add a micro SD card for extra storage, connect it to a computer and allow plenty
