Worked well but there is a trick

Used to compress springs on a '69 Mustang. But there is an undocumented trick to make it work. Too much slack when the tool is supplied to allow it to compress the spring without sinking into the spring seat. The "trick" is to use a 3-4 inch piece of 3/4 pipe and a large washer or two. The tube must be inserted on a threaded rod between two clamps with a large washer between the tube and the small washers. supplied with the instrument. This eliminates the play between the two grippers and the…

You may need a coil spring compressor.

Finally a coil spring compression tool that fits my application. It took one to compress the coil and reinstall the springs back on my 00 Blazer 2-Door 2WD and the others I borrowed didn't work but they compressed a lot and I had to remove the spring again to retrieve the tool. This one also got stuck, but the end unscrewed completely, knocking it out and falling off the spool. I concluded that the threaded portion on the tool was too long and as others have said they ended up cutting off some…

does the job. It could be better.

I am replacing the front suspension on my 1965 Mustang and needed this tool. I'm halfway through with the restoration and this tool does the job, but I understand why people might want to spend more on a different design. Hooks are difficult to attach to the spring in the desired position. The ones closest to the screw head will need to move down a bit to get the clearance needed to fit them in the center of the spring. Without this, the screw head interferes. For my application, a slightly…

Firebird 2nd gen, best tools and gear

Bought to get some coil springs off a 455 with a 2nd gen AC Trans Am which is probably one of the most durable springs made by GM are used. It helped get the feathers out but some tips and warnings for others. Disassemble the compressor, install the upper and lower jaws, then tighten the jackbolt from bottom to top. If you look at the space you need to get the claws on the spools, only 3-4 spools are visible to secure them. Upper and lower spring pockets block access to further open clamps. I…

Too small for heavy springs

My 1994 Chevy is equipped with Heavy Duty front springs (AC-Delco 45H1057). This coil spring compressor is too small for these springs which means the clamps will not quite fit the springs. I was able to get it to work but had to be very careful because the clamps could slip off the spring if they weren't perfectly aligned. I tested them on a set of regular springs (AC-Delco 45H1056) and the clips are secure and tight. Heavy spring wire has a larger diameter (0.89 inch) than regular spring wire
