Description of OTC 7786 Rear Main Installer

This installer is the most accurate way to ensure that the rear main seal is set to the correct depth on the crankshaft. The installer fits over the seal and with the two bolts included attaches to the engine crankshaft. By alternately tightening the bolts the seal is pulled into place quickly easily and with no damage to the rear main seal. Works on 1998 – 2002 Ford 2.5 DOHC engines and 2000 – 2012 Ford 3.0 DOHC engines. Similar to Ford No. 303-178 T82L-6701-A.

Terrible product! Damages the seal!

We only managed to pull the spring out of the seal. The inner lip is too deep. The screws aren't long enough to get started. Now I have to get a new seal. return for refund. OTC really needs to rethink this tool. Definitely not worth the money or the hassle. Now you need to dig up and replace a new oil seal. I think I ran out of money to print.

Pros
  • A dream comes true
Cons
  • Security

It worked but had to be changed.

It worked, but not in its original form. I have found that it is not possible to fit a new seal to the tool without flexing the outer seal. I cut off the outer lip and just used it as a tool to push the gasket in. It's much easier to just put the seal on the end of the crank and use a tool to push the seal in evenly. Worked great and didn't leak. Installed on a Ford Ranger 01 with 2.5 engine.

Pros
  • Good stuff
Cons
  • I have no particular complaints about it, everything is fine

The right tool for the right job!

This is the right tool and it works great with the application it is designed for! The problem lies in the description of Revains and the missing manufacturer's instructions. If you are using it on a 2003 Ford 3L OHC it is the right tool, I'm sure there are many other uses. There is no other way to properly install this gasket or you will have to disassemble everything again. You must use a Mahle gasket and put it on the instrument. Attach the tool to the handle and tighten. It fits perfectly!

Well made tool in bearings and seals

I ordered this item to replace the rear main seal on my son's 4.6 liter Ford Mustang engine. It is well made and does the job EXCEPT the supplied bolts are not long enough to grip the flywheel bolt holes to attach the gasket. This is an unusual thread and quite difficult to find so I lined everything up correctly and then used a rubber mallet to GENTLETY tap the gasket into place with a tool (apparently the depth of the gasket is critical so this tool is essential to the job) . . Seemed to work

Pros
  • Best in its niche
Cons
  • I will add later

Hope that helps! - Bearings and Seals

I bought this sealing tool to replace another one that was out of place. Basically I needed it for the 1985-1999 FORD 5.0 engine. The holes in this tool do not line up with the holes in the crankshaft flywheel, although they say it will fit a 5.0 liter Ford they need to be ground to work. The supplied screws are also the wrong size and too short so you have to use a few different screws as well. The tool fits onto the crankshaft and seals it properly. The main thing when using this tool is to…
