Well made instrument for the price

The refractometer is securely protected in a heavy duty plastic carrying case containing the instrument, screwdrivers, pipettes, cleaning cloth and instructions. The tool is easy to calibrate and seems accurate with my honey.

Seems to work well in tests, measurements and inspections

I haven't had this refractometer very long but for my first uses it seems to work well. The instructions are pretty clear and the process of using it is simple and straightforward. This is my first refractometer but my friend noticed that it looks exactly like the one he paid a lot more for from a major bee supplier.

Excellent honey refractometer for the money!

Seems well made for the price. I checked the calibration with extra virgin olive oil out of the box and everything was fine. Tested with last year's honey and was 18%. Nice protective plastic case and easy to use. Will be using it soon as the Hive extensions will be removed next week. A must have tool for beekeepers unless all your frames are 100% closed before harvest.

You get what you pay for.

This tool is really useless. It turns out that in order to see anything (directly under a 100W lamp) you need very bright illumination directly behind the sample screen. When used under such bright light, the imperfections of the display become visible. The scale is very blurry in the middle in the 18% range to check the moisture content of honey which is why I bought it. Very disappointed but I guess given the cheap price I should have known better.

    Pros
    • Robust design
    Cons
    • Some imperfections

Great little tool. Mine is slightly out of calibration at 70.5. 3 drops of extra virgin olive oil. Tighten slightly with the supplied screwdriver on a scale of 71.5. # Drops of honey and an indicator of 16.5, excellent. Very easy to calibrate and use. Supplied with a plastic case with foam pads, refractometer, 3 transfer pipettes, screwdriver, cleaning cloth and instructions. The cleaning cloth and instructions are located under the top foam tray.

Good to know I don't have to guess anymore

I've only used the refractometer to test honey moisture - it's very easy to use and the results are easy to see. I used to give the bees all the honey without a lid because I didn't want to risk the moisture content. - this tool has proved to me that I can extract a lot of uncorked honey in my dry climate, since the moisture content is often in the normal range. Thanks to this tool, I was able to extract many, many pounds of "extra" honey. It's nice to know I'm not guessing anymore.

Works great for measuring the moisture content of honey

I am satisfied with this refractometer for measuring the moisture content of my honey. The digital scale on the instrument can be focused with the eyepiece. And the blue and white contrast line is easy to distinguish. Gives you a high level of confidence in the moisture content of your honey. It was surprising (although it makes sense) to see the variability from frame to frame. And it's even more amazing to see that the moisture content of a box of perfectly sealed honey is only 18.5%…

    Very inaccurate for analysis instruments

This is not my first refractometer. I've had the old one for almost ten years now and use it for honey several times a year. Well, this defractometer is VERY inaccurate. I calibrated with two different types of extra virgin olive oil set at 71.5% Brix (both showed exactly 71.5%) and then tested it with two different types of honey that I measured last year with my old refractometer (which is now broke) and measured I know they have a water content of 17-18%. This refractometer reads 15.5% for…

Great for measuring H2O in honey

I am new to beekeeping and didn't realize I needed something like this. I thought honey is honey and when I got my first crop I bottled it and the honey tasted great. I know honey is the only food that doesn't spoil, so I didn't think to measure it. I didn't know that if you collect honey that contains too much water, the honey can ferment. That might be fine if you're making mead, but it's not a good idea for table honey. Usually the bees take care of that. They only seal honey when it's moist
